Just got back from an incredible stay at Secrets Papagayo Costa Rica and I can’t say enough good things! The resort is stunning and nestled in such a beautiful, serene location with breathtaking views everywhere you turn. The staff went above and beyond to make our trip special. Everyone was so friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. This trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Secrets Papagayo may not be as big and fancy as some of the larger resorts, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. The smaller, more intimate setting gives it a relaxed and peaceful vibe that’s hard to find elsewhere. There was always something to do without feeling crowded or overwhelming. If you’re looking for a laid-back, beautiful getaway with amazing people and unforgettable scenery, Secrets Papagayo is the place. Can’t wait to go back.

The spacious rooms sit on a hillside and ours had a wonderful view of the bay. To get to it was a bit of a steep hike up a short paver road, but that helped to burn off the extra calories from the delicious food we ate every day. We did an excursion from the resort every day so it makes for a wonderful landing spot between site seeing tours. The snorkeling to the left of the resort is actually pretty nice, especially around the second rock outcropping and the local tours from the beach are wonderful as well. Amstar, in their on-site office, can schedule tours too. We used Giovanni from COCO Tours. He was amazing and he will go out of his way to give you a cultural experience along with all the critters and plant life that you will see. The price is WELL worth it because he knows where to go to see the most! We are planning a return and we will enjoy Secrets Papagayo again!

All in all, a wonderful resort to visit once. I probably wouldn't go back personally because there are so many other areas I'd want to explore and food didn't wow me, but I'm glad I got to experience it once. I got lucky my room was very close to the main pool and restaurant area so I didn't have to wait for many shuttles to go back and forth but I certainly didn't mind when I did have to wait. Everyone here is so hard-working and kind. The entertainment team is fantastic, friendly and fun with great activities all day long. I especially loved the arts. Staff who stood out from the E-Team were Anderson and Dalay, top tier! Danny and Edward were also great. Danny had such a sweet and tender heart for animals and I so appreciated how real he was when we were on the kayak and saw mother nature's animals hurting. Service staff were also wonderful. All the bartenders around the pool were great. Randy went out of his way to let me know what evening activities were going on. The guys at the pool bar made me great mocktails and smoothies to my taste! I visited the resort by myself and did a lot of wandering around. I especially enjoyed the staff who took a few minutes to chat with me when they saw me sitting alone, Anderson really stands out as well as the staff of Himitsu. Himitsu was fantastic for sushi and dinner but their staff truly stood out! Teppanyaki flavors were a bit disappointing, very sweet sauces that I didn't particularly enjoy, but the chefs were excellent and very entertaining. If you're not a huge fan of sweet sauces, I would recommend getting your proteins without sauce added. The staff there were just fantastic, especially Cristian, sushi chef Renardi, Andres, and ladies Yotjani and Karla. I liked the layout of the common areas where most people lingered and plenty of seating away from the pool for those wanting privacy. Worth mentioning, this was the first UVC resort in years that did not hassle me about doing a UVC presentation. Andreina was just a pleasure the entire time I was there. She was helpful anytime I needed something. She really went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable and added zero pressure, which I appreciated so much! She's the sort of person I'd reach out to if I did actually have a question and should be a trainer if she's not. Dining options overall were limited but what was offered seemed fresh and flavorful. I would have loved to go to the steak restaurant but because it's open air, it just felt too hot and uncomfortable to enjoy. That said, the one lunch I had there was great. The staff were so warm and friendly. The ceviche was fantastic. The tuna fish was a bit disappointing as it was served warm. I kept returning to Asian for comfort, service, and consistent quality. Portifino was okay but service was a bit slow when I was there and I wasn't overly impressed, but take that with a grain of salt as I'm not a huge fan of Italian. I did love the animals around the resort including the Iguanas and I got lucky enough to see a monkey at the lobby area one day. The coatis are also adorable. Saw a crap wandering about. I heard a rumor there was a snake near the ceiling of the Italian restaurant which is pretty terrifying but I didn't see that with my own eyes. My room was okay, basic and clean. Water pressure was great, but I did catch a bunch of ants and tiny bugs which was unsettling. I was lucky to get a room in a building right off the common area so very easy to go back and forth. The coffeeshop was a nice start to the day but I do wish they'd add flavors, like nutella to the menu. Preparation and staff friendliness in the coffeeshop were inconsistent, some friendly, some would turn around before you were done talking to them and you weren't sure if they heard you. I also found myself wanting more bread, salad, and cheese options at the buffet. Be prepared that most excursions will be at least an hour away from the hotel but well worth it. Frank the Tank seems to have the monopoly on excursions. Both Frank and Amstar have great options though Frank was incredibly responsive every step of the way and took great care of folks. Amstar had great options too but options were expensive and limited for times when I wanted them. I did the Magic of the Rainforest and Volcano tours - keep in mind the volcano tour may not necessarily include a view of a "volcano" crater or what we conventionally think of. We mostly did things along the side of a volcano, horse-backriding, hot springs, mudbaths, waterfall hikes, etc. The rainforest also had quite a bit of walking but seeing the animals hiding about was cool. I didn't get to see toucans or monkeys and the sloths were there but hard to see up in the tree. Fortunately the people on our tour were amazing so that truly made the experience magical! And again Frank's people take great care of you! Amstar had a whitewater rafting day I thought about but spooked myself out of and a river boat to see crocs and other animals that I was about to book for half a day but I couldn't justify the high prices unfortunately and they wouldn't negotiate. Not sure I'll head back to Costa Rica again b/c everything is so far apart, but if I did, I would fly into another part of the country to explore the Arenal volcano and other adventures.
