We chose this hotel because it was halfway between Reykjavik and Jökulsárlón. It provided a base camp for exploring the South coast. It is also far away from light pollution so we hoped it would allow us to see the Northern Lights. (Unfortunately, the snow and rain prevented that.) The hotel was wonderful. The beds and pillows were comfortable and the room were modern. The breakfast was also great (waffles!). But what set it apart were the kind people who worked there, who tended to our every need, and even let us use the hotel dryers for our wet clothes after a day of exploring waterfalls and beaches (in a driving blizzard!). I would definitely stay there again...

“Lovely stay”

We arrived after dark and, goodness, we missed our turn! It was hidden and so dark, we couldn't see it. We were trying to get there on the gravel road and we finally saw a small building in the middle of nowhere! We thought it couldn't possibly be a hotel, but when we drove closer, there it was! The lovely folks at reception were kind enough to prepare the key for us. We went into the room and it was absolutely lovely! But then, oh my! Flies and other little creatures started to fly towards us, buzzing and zipping about. We spent half an hour trying to shoo them all away. If they just sit on the wall calmly, we wouldn't mind at all! But they either buzzed around us or flew to the lamp and hit the lamp wall, making a terrible noise. In the morning, we enjoyed a lovely breakfast. The ladies were so lovely and friendly, they greeted us with a big smile! The lovely ladies were so busy preparing food, washing dirty dishes, fetching clean dishes, doing laundry and so on. The breakfast dishes were mostly empty, so we were just waiting for them to be filled up gradually. The breakfast area is right next to the entrance doors, so it was a little on the chilly side. It's a cosy little spot, but it felt a little crowded. When we stepped outside, we caught sight of the magnificent Seljalandsfoss in the distance. The hotel was a little gem, tucked away in the middle of nowhere. All in all, it was a lovely stay!

I liked this little hotel. It is off the beaten track and it took 3 goings back and forth to figure out where to turn. It is very clean. The views out the ginormous windows are lovely. The bathroom was small but very clean, also. The beds and linens were very nice. There is a kettle in the room if you want to fix something hot to drink. We ate breakfast and dinner there since there is no restaurant around for miles.

The Hotel Selja is a great hotel - especially if you know what to expect. Location - While you have to drive 2 or 10 kilometers (depending on the direction you come from) of crushed gravel road to reach the hotel, the trade off is that you are in the middle of nowhere and can enjoy a quiet location surrounded by Iceland's natural beauty. Style - The hotel is modern and clean - but not fancy. The lobby is simply a registration counter. The breakfast is served in a room with basic white tables and chairs - nothing fancy. Rooms are minimal (think Ikea white) but comfortable, Food - The hotel has 12 rooms, so they are serving 25-30 people tops. Breakfast buffet covered all the basics. Dinner is available by reservation only and appears to be pretty basic. But, we planned ahead and booked dinner in the closest town.
