“Excellent fish restaurant Hipstur”

This is for the food hall, not the hotel itself, specifically the Hipstur fish outlet. Hipstur is really good. The special the day we were there was ling with a lemon sauce and cous cous, which was excellent. Possibly the best thing we ate during our trip to Iceland.

We did not enjoy this hotel. Whilst the beds were comfortable and the bathroom clean and well-kept, we found the vibe of the place difficult. The rooms were incredibly hot, especially on the east side of the hotel. The window covering was a plise blackout blind only (no curtains); the morning sun shone onto the blind and the window opening was very small, so we woke up dripping in sweat each day. Our bathroom was a wet room, which meant everything got soaked when we showered, and because housekeeping is only provided at an additional cost during your stay you get through a lot of towels trying to dry the place. The breakfast and cafe area is small - most of that area of the building is devoted to shop stands. Breakfast is continental only: the pastries were tasty but there is no hot food available, which was a surprise given the price. The only coffee freely offered with breakfast is from a large jug of filter coffee; if you want any other kind the cost is additional. The food hall is obviously popular with locals and tourists, which meant it was packed every evening. Food stalls ran out of food, or required 45 mins waiting. It certainly wasn’t possible to return from a long day and sit down to a relaxed drink anywhere, and if you want to eat you have to fight your way through a scrum and then struggle to find somewhere to sit. We were there on a Saturday night and the street noise from people leaving the bar downstairs was disturbing until well after midnight.

“Door did not lock”

Make sure to check that the door to your room actually locks. Ours did not, which is completely ridiculous when you see the price of the room. Hotel said there was nothing they could do. Make sure to check that the door to your room actually locks. Ours did not, which is completely ridiculous when you see the price of the room. Hotel said there was nothing they could do. Also, said since we booked thru a vendor (Guide to Iceland) the hotel could not give us refund or discount. We are still pursuing thru vendor, but thought we should notify others of this issue. Aside from that the family, loved the atmosphere and food hall, but can’t recommend it because hotel rooms should have locking doors.

We had high expectations for this hotel, but unfortunately they were not entirely met. There was nothing wrong with the room or bathroom as such, but the room was extremely hot and we could not get the temperature down. Keeping the small window open was not really an option because of the many biting insects. Other rooms appeared to have insect screens, but ours did not. Of the two nights we stayed, we only slept reasonably well on one. The breakfast buffet was fairly limited, but very tasty. One convenient feature is that the hotel is located above a small food hall, although several eateries had already closed. Fortunately, Hveragerði offers plenty of other places to eat. The hotel is a great base for hiking to Reykjadalur and its geothermal area, or for visiting the lava tunnel at Raufarhólshellir.
