This hotel was arranged for us on a tour that explored Vik and Katla. It proved a good all-round choice with decent, if rather small, double rooms and the only fault (for those with weak backs) being an apparent Icelandic predilection for rather soft mattresses. It is quite isolated and has excellent views. The staff were uniformly good and helpful, drawn from at least three countries in Europe. The bar area was spacious with a fine terrace, and stocked a range of Icelandic beers among the international offering. The set dinner was maybe a bit unimaginative but was good enough, whilst the breakfast was sufficiently diverse to set one up for the day.

This hotel was booked for us about 10 days in advance of our Iceland trip by an internet travel tip planner company, and it was selected by the company for us. We stayed there two nights in a room on the 1st floor in the old wing. Very nice setting/location, great restaurant, and we had a nice view. Our room was supposed to be the superior room(whatever that means) and have a soaking tub, but this room had a walk in shower. When we inquired about this at the front desk we were told we actually had a better room than what was initially booked for us(walk in shower being better than a soaking tub). I'm from the US and this seemed strange to me, but what was I going to do, I was told they were 100% booked. Our room has a slightly odd smell, which we attributed to stagnant air because there was no HVAC that moved or filtered the air. Leaving the small window open for a day seemed to take care of it. There were some shoddy/noticeable drywall repairs, and the outer finished part of one of the towel hooks in the bathroom was missing. There was a concerning sign posted in the bathroom, maybe this is just Icelandic humor, but it said if the water is not hot enough too many people are currently using it and to try again later. I was expecting more perfection for the price. But we slept well and the meals at the restaurant were good. If in the area again I would probably try another hotel before staying here again.

Beautiful hotel - facilities are nice but... When we first arrived, we were told we got upgraded - the room was on the lower floor, not very big, nothing special other than a very strange livestock smell. After mentioning this to the receptionist who agreed, we were moved to a different room - upstairs, bigger and nicer. So I wonder about the original upgrade. The rooms are very nice, the location is in the middle of nowhere surrounded by farms with horses. The breakfast was very good. The cost of this hotel was expensive for what you get but others in the area are similarly expensive.
