Well maintained property. Smooth check-in and check-out. Clean, comfortable, spacious room with all amenities. Good Housekeeping. Breakfast Buffet: Vast spread of Indian and western items, everything well stocked, thanks to the attentive, hardworking staff. Egg/Omelet station, Dosa station and much, much, more. Tea/Coffee...enjoyed the Masala Chai and Filter coffee. Coffee machine for lattes etc. Lunch Buffet: Vast spread of all sorts of dishes. Pizza/Pasta station in addition to Dosa station. Desserts including indian sweets, cakes and ice cream. Dinner Buffet: Huge variety of food items. Chaat cart offering three different snacks. Since only one person there, it was a bit slow. Enjoyed the Pani Puri. Pizza/Pasta station. Dosa station. Various desserts...cakes, indian sweets etc. No tea/coffee station. No coffee machine. Asked for a Latte to top of the wonderful meal, but it never came, disappointing. Breakfast Buffet; Day 2 Same vast spread. Egg/Omelet station. Dosa station. Tea/Coffee station. Staff, still hardworking, were not as attentive, had clearly moved on to impressing the next group that had arrived...so obvious. Good location for visiting temples. Shopping mall close by. All in all, a good stay!

“Decent hotel but sorely missing the Marriott brand experience”

I am an elite status holder at both Hilton and Marriott, and in the absence of the former, I chose to stay at the latter. The difference in quality and experience between a typical Hilton and this Marriott was quite noticeable, and I would recommend this hotel ONLY because the other hotels in Madurai are not a standard chain (Hilton/ITC/Marriott etc.) property. I travelled from San Francisco to Delhi, and with my parents, we travelled from Delhi and stayed for 2 nights at this property in two Premium King rooms - one for my parents, and one for me. It was during TN elections, so the on-prem bar was shut. Our stay was a mixed experience, and here's what'll help you decide whether to stay here or not. If you're not a Bonvoy/Marriott member, I would also recommend you lookup Grand Madurai (GRT Hotel) and Heritage Madurai. They are slightly closer to the temples, too. What works? 1. The food - awesome every single meal (incl the cafe) with exceptional variety, and most importantly, attention to customer experience at the restaurant. For example, while my father and I were waiting for our a-la carte meal, the server brought over soup and bread without our asking. Granted, it was from their buffet and not an expense to them, but the thought matters. 2. Location and amenities - this is the less crowded and more organized/newer part of Madurai, and hence the look and feel is a bit more posh. The pool and the gym are decent, and if you can survive the weather, the evenings are quite alright. What doesn't work? 1. Untrained front desk staff - any typical Hilton or Marriott property has two counters - one for Members, and one for General Admission. The lanes existed here, but were not implemented at all. Anyone was walking up anywhere and basic protocols like how to address a Member, knowledge of whats included in their memberships, how to extend courtesy etc. were all lacking. The intentions were good, no doubt, but hospitality 101 training was missing. I saw a LOT of staff in uniforms and courteous smiles, but they seemed to lack coordination, purpose, and attention to customer service. Some examples: - when I checked if an upgrade was available (which is a perk of my Bonvoy membership tier, not a favor) I was informed that political VIPs get first preference and have taken up all the rooms. While I can totally understand upgrades not being available on the day, this particular excuse is unprecedented and not worthy of the Marriott brand. I was made to feel so small and insignificant. - I quickly booked another room and took my elderly parents to theirs. We ordered tea and coffee for 3 pax, but the attendant brought up 2 empty cups, delivered quantities that'd barely be good for 2 pax, and a total of 3 cookies. I dont expect generosity, but basic room service awareness was consistently lacking. - On departure day, it took about 30 mins for our bags to arrive from our room to the front desk, it was utter chaos. At a Hilton, the front desk/concierge would offer/arrange for a coffee while a guests waits. 2. Cramped room size - despite being Premiere King, the rooms felt cramped. I liked the quality of the toiletries, bedding, towels etc. and once we got used to the limited space, we slept comfortably. My guidance here is that one room is good enough for 2 adults at max. 3. Slow housekeeping - each day, I would notice food trays sitting outside the rooms. I am used to corridors being kept tidy, and it was disappointing to see the floors left unattended for extended periods of time. In summary, this is a decent property with excellent food and comfortable rooms. What could be better is an investment in front desk and housekeeping staff training, education on dealing with Bonvoy members, and a focus on customer needs, even when the customer is not explicitly asking for something. I think the restaurant management team at the Madurai Kitchen should train the front desk and housekeeping staff - that team knows what they're doing and are on-brand for a Marriott.
