I stayed for two nights at Sasando (name of a local musical instrument) Hotel which is currently the most expensive hotel in Kupang. But four stories of a new five-star hotel near the airport are already up, and when the hotel is finished, Sasando will have to upgrade its facilities in order to compete. Taking into consideration that Kupang does not have luxury hotels, I would rate the Sasando average. It has a beautiful view of the ocean, mostly available from a special function room that is rarely used. It also has a large air conditioned meeting room with speakers and set-ups for seminars and workshops. The price of a room (about $50) includes a breakfast consisting of rice porridge with peanuts, chicken, hard boiled eggs, fried rice, and some fried meat. There is also bread butter and jam, fresh fruit and coffee/tea/water. The rooms are of average size (see photo), and the beds are comfortable, but the sheets and pillow cases smelled damp, as if they were not fully dried out after they were washed. Free Internet access is included in the price of the room. We could go on the wireless network, but no one in my group could access any website, so it was useless. There is a pool, but I did not use it. Two bottles of drinking water are provided every day. There is a TV with a choice of local stations. Water in the bathroom is strong, and hot water is available immediately. Towels were thin and gray but clean. The air conditioning in my room was not very cold, so I left it on while I was out of the room. The Sasando is not much compared to hotels in Jakarta, but it probably is the best in Kupang . . . until the new hotel near the airport opens.
