We had a fantastic stay at the Baliem Valley Resort. We chose the 5 days / 4 nights tour and were absolutely thrilled with the experience. • Location & Views: The resort’s location is breathtaking, offering spectacular views over the valley. It’s the perfect place to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature. • The Tour: The itinerary was excellently organized. This resort may not be a luxury one (and it does not advertise itself as such), but after arriving in Wamena, walking through the market, and understanding the situation the region is in, the hotel takes on the category of a true palace. Our visit to Wamena has been one of the most human experiences of our lives. It is also worth noting that the experience may seem expensive at first glance, but this is largely due to the geography of the area and the logistical challenges it entails. Wamena is extremely remote, and almost everything needs to be flown in, which inevitably impacts the overall cost. Upon arrival at Wamena airport, we were welcomed by Wendi, our guide—an absolutely lovely man who accompanied us throughout all the activities and from whom we learned so much. Arriving at the resort was wonderful. Check-in takes place in the lounge/restaurant, a spacious and beautiful area with high ceilings, filled with local handicrafts and offering breathtaking views over the Baliem Valley. The staff were attentive and kind from the very first moment. The cabin was lovely and very clean, with a large window overlooking the valley. We were the only guests at the hotel during our stay, and the silence—broken only by the sounds of the jungle—was incredibly relaxing. Breakfast is delicious and plentiful, featuring fresh local products. Every morning they served eggs cooked to your preference, freshly squeezed juice, pancakes, avocado, fruit, honey, local coffee and tea, as well as toast. Lunches, which took place during the excursions, consisted of a picnic with fried rice, fruit, and vegetables. Everything was very tasty. When we returned from the activities, we were welcomed with warm fried plantain. Dinners were fine: menus were somewhat simple, but the portions were generous. On the second day we went on a walk through the valley, during which we learned about local customs, life in Wamena, and the tribes of the area—especially the Dani and the Lani. Tanapius, the group’s porter, accompanied us throughout the entire route. He did not speak English, but we managed to communicate a little through gestures. He also took great care of us: he held my hand on the more difficult sections so I wouldn’t fall and constantly greeted us with his warm smile. The walk itself was enjoyable, with beautiful views, although the beginning was a bit tough due to the scorching sun above our heads. Without a doubt, the best part of the activity was spending the day with the two of them. On the third day we visited a Dani tribe and attended the pig festival. It was an incredible and deeply enriching experience. We spent the day in the village, met the tribe, witnessed the pig ritual, visited several huts, and spent some time in the men’s hut. The hotel offers a picnic for that day if you prefer not to eat the pig. We chose to eat the same food as the tribe and had mixed results: it suited my husband perfectly, but it caused me stomach issues. I recommend choosing the hotel picnic and only tasting the tribe’s food unless you have a very strong stomach (which I do not). It is important to read the information carefully before booking, in order to understand what kind of experience you are signing up for. If what you are looking for is a luxury jungle resort with maximum comfort and Instagram-style selfies, this is not the place for you. If, on the other hand, you are seeking an experience that will fill your soul, teach you a great deal, and put your feet firmly on the ground, do not hesitate. This has been a life experience of incalculable value, one in which we learned so much and created unforgettable memories. Wah, Wah, Wah.

The hotel is undeniably beautiful at first glance, but the experience doesn’t match the $2,000+ price tag. While the owners clearly profit, it feels like little is reinvested into the property—or the staff. Locals are employed, which is good, but there’s no investment in training such as English lessons, and some guides were very difficult to understand. The food was the biggest disappointment. I’ve never stayed at a hotel where lunch consisted of reheated leftovers—completely unacceptable at any price point. Breakfast was monotonous and minimal, the afternoon “snack” was fried bananas every single day, and overall meals left me hungry. The only real highlight was the local crayfish, which was excellent. The resort requires a five-night stay, but three would be enough if you time it with the pig feast and annual festival. Be aware: the pig killing at the feast can be difficult to watch. Our guide also smelled. We could not close the windows. Accommodations also need improvement. Request a hut close to the main lodge, as some are a long uphill hike. Rooms lack the basics you’d expect at this level—no robes, not enough towels, limited outlets, and you have to carry your own jug to refill drinking water. Be aware, the hotel gives people free coffee for positive Google reviews. In short: a stunning setting undermined by poor food, lack of amenities, and little attention to guest comfort. With proper reinvestment, this could be extraordinary, but right now it’s not worth the premium price.
