We arrived just after 10PM following a late flight into Rome. Check in is at the Mecenate Palace Hotel, about 20m away. Checkin was easy, and full payment for our confirmed reservation of an Apartment (1-3 People) (Room Only) booked in January 2025 for June was made as requested. Some time after we settled into the room we realised that we were in a standard room, and not the apartment that was reserved and confirmed. Upon returning to reception at 10:30PM, no apartments were available (we understand there are only two). The initial offer of complimentary breakfast or a hotel room was inadequate given the rate difference, and staff couldn’t authorize further compensation. Due to our tour arrangements, we did not see the manager in the morning, however, the reception staff were fully aware of our situation and concerns - Well done for handovers. We were also asked what our compensation expectatations were with the staff. However when we returned from our tours, reception could only offer a different room that had a kitchnette with no compensation to reflect that the room was still a downgrade with lower rates. We requested speaking to the manager but he wasn't on site, so we asked reception to call him, which did not do in our presence. By the time we returned to our room, the phone rang and the Manager was back on site and able to meet. Bottom line, he was very apologetic, acknowledged that things could have been done differently and arranged for a refund to be credited to our bank account (which he said would be faster than charge back to our credit card). We were happy with the outcome. We found the accomodation to be well located and walking distance to Roma Termini. We stayed in two rooms - the second, and 'upgraded' room had a very small kitchenette - cooktop and microwave and fridge. Grocery store is less than 200m away over the road. Beds comfortable and rooms clean; first room had a large drawer safe. The second room had a drawer safe, and a smaller one but neither worked. Maintenance changed the battery, but the safe was still not operational. We didn't bother reporting a second time. We had breakfast in the Hotel's restaurant on the top floor. Nice views, and buffet breakfast had and adequate choice or hot and cold items and table service coffee made to order.

Residenza Mecenate is one of those accommodations in Italy that you would easily pass by, because it is just a wooden gate with a bell. However, if you enter the gate, the uniqueness of the place is revealed. Here, on the stairs, we reached a cozy inner garden, from which the rooms opened. The room size is adequate. The bathroom has a Jacuzzi tub instead of a shower cabin. The Termini train station and the metro station are a few minutes' walk away. We saw no sign of cleaning in less visible corners. The electrical system works interestingly, because when we removed the gate card, the floor lamp stayed on, but the refrigerator stopped...

“Excellent flat, shame about the mattress”

Our room was on an inner courtyard, so there was no noise at all. Spacious, great bathroom, fridge, clean, good location. We stayed 5 nights and by the 4th night, both of us were really struggling with the solid mattress. It has no give in it at all. Such a shame.
