Golner Stern in Caldero Italy is a fine hotel. You are in the middle of town which is why we where there. A wine festival last night was fun. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Breakfast is more than you expect in Italy and very good. The hotel is a combination of several buildings and pretty much a bit hard to navigate. The pool is a 100+ meters away and the parking is hard to find but very secure once you find it. These are not negative and should be expected in a historical building and town. The rooms seem to remodeled but room to room may be inconsistent. Try Room 212 as it has great light and a good feel.

“Nice traditional hotel”

Very comfortable, clean and well decorated, nice rooms front facing onto the street, access to pool and gardens in elevated behind the hotel. Inclusive breakfast with interesting choice. Central base in the middle of the town.

This is a medium-sized hotel located in the center of Caldaro on the main pedestrian street. We went by bus from Bolzano No. 132 to Rottenburgplatz stop, then you can go down a hill a few hundred meters through the city to arrive. One guets a bit fooled by some of the pictures of the hotel which shows the beautiful pool and spa facility that belongs to the hotel but is located in a completely different location. The hotel is a completely different much older building. There is an indoor walkway from the hotel to the spa and pool area. We had a normal sized room without a balcony but overlooking the pedestrian street. The room that had air conditioning was in bright but pale colors and the furniture was somewhat worn. The room had a safety box, a fridge and free wifi that worked very well. The remote control of the TV was broken so we do not know which channels were available. A little strange, much of the room was occupied by a wardrobe-solution that was placed in the room. Strange solution for the bathroom. The sink was in the same room as the bedroom while the toilet and shower were in another room. The super designed sink worked badly as the water easily ran down the floor. Also there was a smell of sewage in the shower room. Outside the room in the staircase there was a station with hot water and tea. The breakfast was served from 7.30 and you could eat it indoors or in a small garden. It was a buffet with an unusual element since they had honeycomb. They had an unusually large selection of muesli and nuts. You could boil eggs yourself. The bread was freshly baked and absolutely amazing. Otherwise there were like usually in hotels cheese, ham juice, etc. The coffee was served at the table. In the same building there is also a restaurant, a really good pizzeria, with the same name as the hotel but it is run by another business. The hotel also has its own small bar but there were quite a few guests there. We found the pictures in internet showing the hotel to show a more modern and fresher hotel than in reality, and the price for an overnight stay was quite high.

This hotel has many strengths--and many weaknesses. My wife and I visited the hotel on a hiking trip, and we were in a group with 3 couples who are good friends. Through them, we learned the rooms in the hotel are different--hence the title of my review. Our room (room 306) had an upstairs loft with two seating areas, which was a nice treat. My wife and I used it to have a glass of wine and watch tv. However, some of our friends had a room so small they could barely stand near the bed, and their closet was tiny. Our closet was huge--so large that we could unpack, hang our clothes, and store our two suitcases in it. An asset to the hotel is the service. The folks at the front desk, and in the restaurant and bar are very helpful and attentive. The hotel restaurant provides a nice breakfast with ample food choices and good pastries and coffee. Besides the restaurant, the hotel has a bar, spa, and pool. Our room had a contemporary design, room darkening curtains, was clean, and had a refrigerator. Another plus is the hotel's location. It's very accessible to restaurants, shops, and is a perfect location for going to hiking, camping, biking, and skiing locations. However, if you are a light sleeper, be aware the town's bells ring every morning at 6:30. They ring 3 sets, 14 rings per set! (The hotel provides earplugs in your room.) As for things we did not like, let's start with the bathroom. The toilet and bidet are separate from the bathroom (in their own room which had a sliding glass door). The shower/bathtub was risky to use because it was very slippery, and there were no safety bars. When you use the shower, you can count on getting water on the bathroom floor. There's no shower curtain--instead, just a narrow glass valence which doesn't do much to keep the water from the shower spraying on your body in the tub. The valence looks cool but it doesn't work! As a result, every day we had to use some of the provided towels to absorb the water on the floor. When you use the modern style sink, which is wide and shallow, the water from the faucet splashes on you. Water, water, everywhere! Housekeeping provided two tiny soaps on day one and didn't replace them on day two. Not good when you and your wife shower in the morning to start your day, and shower in the evening after hiking all day! We left a note asking for more soap--and housekeeping left us 1 bar the next day! The bed did not have a top sheet--just a bottom sheet and a light comforter. When you enter the room, there's a bank of four light switches right inside the door. During our 3 day stay, we never did figure out what switch controls what. Only by experimenting do you finally figure out the switch that turns on the light in the toilet room. In my opinion, all hotels should have reliable wi-fi. The wi-fi in the hotel, which is free, stinks. It's not dependable and it's slow. Would I stay at this hotel again? Yes, if just for 3 days and if I could get room 306 or a similar room. Our friends in the smaller rooms really suffered. I hope the owners read this review and make improvements as it would add a lot to the potential of the hotel.
