“Outstanding hotel overlooking Florence”

A very special hotel in the hills above Florence. Everything was perfect, especially the newly refurbished junior suite that we enjoyed. With regular free shuttles into Florence it is the place to stay, away from the city heat. Beautiful large swimming pool and gardens to relax in. Will definitely … more

“A special place”

The Villa San Michele is a special place. This elegant hotel provides a peaceful reprieve from Florence and provides easy access to the city. The grounds of the hotel were beautiful and provided a pleasant setting for a drink. The pool was also very nice and the service was consistently good.

“Much lower than expected”

we were disappointed by the service, the team lacked training, the worst was in the hotel's restaurant. Otherwise the location is beautiful and so are the amenities but this was not enough to compensate.

  • Yes, guests at Villa San Michele, A Belmond Hotel have highlighted that: Michelin reserves its highest distinction for places “worth a special journey.” Villa San Michele deserves the same description. We came to Tuscany for a milestone birthday expecting Florence to be the highlight. Instead, we found ourselves planning our days around the hotel. Our advice would actually be to reverse the traditional itinerary. Spend your first day unwinding at Villa San Michele—by the pool, at the Guerlain Spa, lingering over an aperitivo in the monastery gardens before dinner overlooking Florence—and only then venture into the city the following day. It is a gentler introduction to Tuscany, and one that allows you to fully appreciate what makes this extraordinary property so special. Perched in the hills of Fiesole overlooking Florence, Belmond’s Villa San Michele occupies a beautifully restored fifteenth-century monastery whose Renaissance façade is traditionally attributed to Michelangelo. Despite being only minutes from the city, it feels like another world. ⸻ Quick Take Best for: romantic escapes, anniversaries, birthdays and quiet luxury Avoid if: travelling with very young children looking for extensive family facilities Must book: a Garden Room in the main monastery or, if budget allows, the spectacular Limonaia Suite Standout: impeccable attention to detail, extraordinary setting and one of the best nights’ sleep we have ever had ⸻ The Setting — Tuscany at Its Most Elegant Few hotels begin with a façade traditionally attributed to Michelangelo. The former monastery has been restored with enormous sensitivity, yet retains the tranquillity one imagines the monks once enjoyed centuries ago. Cypress trees, Renaissance gardens and sweeping terraces overlooking Florence create an atmosphere that feels less like a hotel and more like being invited to stay at one of Tuscany’s great private estates. Although Florence lies only minutes away, the city feels wonderfully distant. ⸻ Rooms — Quiet Luxury Perfected Following the complete renovation completed in spring 2026, the hotel’s thirty-nine rooms feel immaculate. Everything has been meticulously curated rather than simply decorated. Tuscan Carrara marble sits alongside the increasingly rare blue-veined Cipollino marble throughout the bathrooms, complemented by Richard Ginori porcelain, custom Acqua di Parma amenities and beautifully crafted Italian furnishings. It is often the smallest details that distinguish a truly great hotel, and Villa San Michele excels at them. The signature fragrance of the Acqua di Parma amenities is memorable, the vanity area is beautifully lit, and every element feels quietly considered. The oversized beds—almost two metres wide—are among the most comfortable we have ever slept in. Each evening, while guests are at dinner, the room is quietly transformed. Elegant scendi letto cushions appear beside the bed, the lighting softens, curtains are drawn, water is refreshed and everything is prepared for the night. The service is so discreet that you never notice it happening—only that the room somehow feels perfect when you return. Quite simply, it was one of the best nights’ sleep we have ever had in a hotel. If choosing a room, we would recommend those overlooking the monastery gardens. Although rooms facing Florence enjoy spectacular views, the garden rooms generally benefit from larger windows and feel brighter. If budget allows, the Limonaia Suite combines generous living space with arguably the finest panoramic views over Florence. ⸻ Dining — Effortlessly Italian Dining is consistently outstanding. Lunch beside the swimming pool is exactly what one hopes for in Tuscany. Watching an authentic Neapolitan pizzaiolo prepare pizzas by hand while overlooking Florence is surprisingly difficult to improve upon. As the afternoon cools, aperitivo in the monastery gardens becomes one of the highlights of the stay, particularly after six o’clock when the light softens and the stone façade takes on its warm golden glow. Dinner at the hotel’s main restaurant is exceptional. Reserve one of the terrace tables overlooking Florence and arrive before sunset to enjoy the changing light over the city. For those seeking a more gastronomic experience, Antesi by Chef Alessandro Cozzolini offers a refined tasting menu in an equally spectacular setting, with arguably the finest views on the property. If there is one small criticism, it is the by-the-glass wine list, which feels surprisingly limited considering you are surrounded by some of the world’s greatest vineyards. A broader selection of mature Tuscan wines would elevate an already excellent dining experience for guests who prefer not to order a full bottle. Breakfast deserves special mention. It is among the finest we have encountered anywhere in Italy. Alongside an extensive à la carte menu sits an exceptional buffet featuring homemade pastries and cakes, local cheeses and charcuterie, freshly pressed juices, seasonal fruit, and excellent gluten-free and vegan selections. It is generous without ever feeling excessive. ⸻ Wellness — The Art of Slowing Down The swimming pool overlooking Florence almost justifies spending an entire day without leaving the hotel. Equally memorable is the Guerlain Spa. The treatments are exceptional, but it is the atmosphere that lingers in the memory: intimate, beautifully scented and wonderfully calming. It is exactly the sort of place where time quietly disappears. The twenty-four-hour gym is another thoughtful touch, particularly for international travellers, with personal training available until early afternoon. ⸻ Service — Belmond at Its Finest This is where Villa San Michele truly distinguishes itself. Service feels warm, intuitive and completely unforced. The General Manager personally greeted us during our stay to ensure everything met expectations—a gesture that perfectly reflects the culture of the hotel. Management also showed remarkable flexibility, offering us the use of the facilities well after checkout so we could spend another afternoon by the pool before continuing to Florence. Nothing feels scripted; everything simply happens. ⸻ Atmosphere — Understated Sophistication The clientele is elegant, discreet and international. There is no need to dress to impress, yet everyone somehow appears effortlessly stylish. Villa San Michele is not a place to see and be seen. It is a place to slow down. ⸻ Conclusion — One of Tuscany’s Great Destinations Some visitors may use Villa San Michele simply as a base from which to explore Florence. We believe that misses the point. Florence deserves your time. So does Villa San Michele. It is not merely somewhere to stay while visiting Tuscany—it is one of the reasons to come. Michelin says three stars are reserved for places “worth a special journey.” After an unforgettable stay at Villa San Michele, we couldn’t think of a more fitting description.
