The hotel is a 30 minute walk from Malcesine, which is nice because the town (like the other towns we visited) gets very crowded. We had half board and the food was good if a little unusual on occasion; salad bar, pasta course, meat & veg course and dessert. More than enough for us. The breakfast was excellent. Drink prices were reasonable, 10.50€ for a pint and a hugo spritz. The hotel is on a busy road with a bus stop opposite if you don't feel like walking. There's a small pebble beach and you can swim in the lake. We didn't use the pool but it looked nice. Also lots of water sports to watch, like paragliding and windsurfing. The boat trips and cable car all depart from the town.

We found the Astoria an excellent place to stay, it was spotlessly clean in the dining room and other social areas. The staff were very happy and helpful, the bar staff would bring you drinks and make your evenings very relaxing. Our room was warm and comfortable and looked after every day. The hotel is right on the waterfront. Malcesine was a 35 minute walk to a bustling centre from where the ferries can be caught. We had a wonderful week of being looked after and can recommend The Astoria if you don't want to stop in the town centre, thanks too all. L

“Excellent hotel with beautiful location”

Friendly hotel, very clean and staff friendly. Good location overlooking the lake. Limited choice of food for vegetarians. Would be good to add V next to the menu options.

After reading many reviews of this hotel, I must admit I had high expectations. Some of these were met, and some were not. The positives first. I don't think I have ever been in such a clean hotel! It's immaculate everywhere! The style in the public areas is somewhat dated, but not at all worn or dilapidated. The room was minimalist in style, again immaculate. Plenty of hanging and storage space. Large, firm but comfy bed. Rooms serviced daily. As others have mentioned, there is no tea or coffee making facilities in the room, but we took our own kettle etc. so not a problem. Pleasant bar area, and drinks reasonably priced. The pool and garden were lovely, and well maintained. All the staff we encountered were polite, friendly and helpful. Not so positive. We understood that the hotel was not in Malcesine itself, but a pleasant walk along the lake. What we hadn't realised was that it was a 3k walk, some of it was along a very busy road, which took us (both in our 70s )a good 45 min, so not something to undertake several times a day. We were disappointed with the food at the hotel. Breakfast was adequate, no more. Very limited range of cooked items, and not regularly replenished. Fried eggs left in the heated container went hard and rubbery. Several days there was no bacon, just a limited range of ham and cheese. Evening meals were ordered each evening for the next day. Salad bar was fine, pasta course mainly OK, but main courses were, in our opinion poor. Usual.y a choice of meat, but all accompanied by 3 sad pieces of boiled potato and a dollop of soggy overcooked veg. One evening I chose a Caprese Salad - even that came with soggy spuds and veg! Sweet course tended to be the type of sweet you could buy in Iceland, and not always properly defrosted! As it was October, and as previously mentioned the distance from town, there was nowhere else nearby to eat, so we had no alternative but to eat there. It is a shame, as otherwise this would have been a good holday. We loved the area, plenty to see around d Lake Garda, and we'll probably go back there, but sadly, not to Hotel Astoria.
