Wow - what a lovely hotel full of exquisite charm - opposite end of the dreadful and boring faceless uniformity of modern hotels. The staff were amazing and always helpful. The menu fantastic as was the wine choice. We had a very pleasantly quiet double aspect room with lovely views of the Giudecca canal, a room full of Venetian charm. A few metres from the hotel is a vaporetto stop making access to the rest of the city incredibly easy. It is also a stop for the water buses to and from the airport. Impossible to fault this hotel - fantastic.

Great location and lovely staff at this charming canal-side hotel. Rooms are full of character and furnished with proper old pieces so that it feels like staying in a family home. (Don’t come if you prefer modern identikit fittings.) Lunch on the pontoon over the water was fabulous; particularly enjoyed the mussels and clams in a deliciously fragrant lightly spiced liquor. Very nice wine list. Romantic, shady courtyard garden. Will be back

This was my first time staying at Hotel La Calcina, but my eighth trip to Venice. I always stay in the Dorsoduro area, as it is convenient to vaporetti stops, but is very quiet and uncrowded. The hotel where I usually stayed stopped serving breakfast and is in need of a refresh, so I looked for another option - this was so fortunate as it lead me to La Calcina. The hotel is charming outside and even more beautiful inside - both the exterior and interior are exceptionally well-kept and immaculate. The interior is decorated beautifully and has a welcoming reception area with a cozy alcove to sit while filling out check-in paperwork. When I was there in November, they had a fire going and Christmas decorations up, so it was a relaxing introduction to the hotel after a very lengthy trip from Chicago via Munich into Venice (20 hours total). Next to the reception and alcove is the warm dining room where the included breakfast is served - I believe they also serve at the outdoor area overhanging the Giudecca Canal, but it was a bit too chilly in late November. My room was perfect - the decor was classic Venetian and included small treasures and artwork that is found throughout the hotel. There was a small seating area and comfortable bed with a private bathroom. Lying in bed with the shutters open, I could watch the canal with the boats passing by. I loved listening to the water lapping to lull me to sleep (or when struggling to fall asleep with jet lag issues). I pushed through sleep deprivation and made it to the hotel's restaurant for dinner. The food and service were great, as was the wine list! I didn't have special requests during my stay, but did have a few general questions and the staff was always well informed. Everyone at the hotel, including the dining room, were so friendly and welcoming. Another word on the location - it is two minutes to vaporetti stops, including to/from the airport, which is incredibly convenient. But the stop is far enough - maybe 150 feet or so - that there is no noise around the hotel. The windows in the rooms are so well insulated, that there is virtually no noise inside the rooms when they are closed. My experience was so great that I decided to rearrange the end of my trip to Italy this year to include Venice so that I can spend four nights at La Calcina again at the end of November. To me, the coziness, wonderful staff, excellent location, and price are a real value in Venice, where hotel prices can be quite jaw-dropping.

“Research pays off. This is hard to beat for a moderately priced hotel in Venice”

We arrived late. 11 of us just before 22.00 when the kitchen closes. The staff and chef couldn’t have been more helpful and delicious dishes and pizza were served up promptly accompanied by good wine. The service remained attentive and friendly throughout. We arrived late. 11 of us just before 22.00 when the kitchen closes. The staff and chef couldn’t have been more helpful and delicious dishes and pizza were served up promptly accompanied by good wine. The service remained attentive and friendly throughout. The location is fantastic. Pay a little more and get a view over the Giudecca canal. Quiet yet close to everything with good access to Alilaguna and vaporetti. Venice is no longer cheap but this is good value for money!
