Shosuke no Yado is a beautiful onsen hotel, located a bit outside Aizuwakamatsu city. It's attached to a river and waterfall. Japanese room is quite large and next to the river. There is tea set and sweet provided in every room. There is public onsen on the first floor which can enjoy waterfall during onsen and also private onsen with charge on the first floor and rooftop. The hotel provide free rental colorful Yukata for all women guest. Dinner set is lovely. There are a lot of food, fresh and delicious. Breakfast is also great. A mochi is the best. Hotel staff are nice and helpful.

We stayed here for two nights during our trip through Fukushima and had mixed feelings overall. The setting beside the waterfall is genuinely beautiful, especially at night, and the onsen baths were the highlight of our stay. The restaurant staff were warm and attentive, and the whole ryokan has a relaxing atmosphere that feels very traditional. There were, however, a few issues that affected the experience for us. One member of our family struggled with the yukata sizing. The women’s options seemed quite limited, and there was nothing suitable available for a curvier figure. Staff did try to help after we asked, but it still left her feeling uncomfortable and excluded, which was disappointing at this price point. Dinner was enjoyable and beautifully presented, although breakfast may be challenging for guests who are less familiar with Japanese-style morning meals. A small selection of lighter continental items such as fruit or yoghurt would make the buffet more accessible for international travellers. Check-in was also slower than expected, with a lot of paperwork involved. The staff member assisting us was very polite throughout, but the arrival experience felt less welcoming than we had anticipated. Despite these points, we still appreciated the baths, the scenery and the traditional ryokan atmosphere. I can understand why many guests love staying here, but for the amount we paid, we personally expected a more comfortable and inclusive overall experience.

I stayed at an onsen resort in Aizu-wakamatsu. The Takinoyo Hotel overlooks the Fushimigataki Waterfall. My room was a modern Japanese-style room. Between 3 and 7 p.m., they offer free soft serve ice cream, beer, and barley tea. I had a Kaiseki dinner, a multi-course formal Japanese meal. When I was shown to my table, there were various dishes waiting for me. After the server lit the hot plate and grill, my fish cooked in the hot plate and the Fukushima Wagyu beef and vegetables cooked on the grill. We were served tea and some sort of pudding for dessert. After dinner, I enjoyed my hotel's onsen. It was so relaxing to soak away my troubles.

We visited Aizuwakamatsu at the national holiday weekend so there were limited options to us in this famous onsen town, Hagishiyama. We wanted a more modern hotel, and while the shots of the room look good on their website, the reality is that it is much smaller than I had expected. Though the room looked new, the bathroom was a disappointment, small and shabby. With two large beds in the room, that leaves little space for moving around. And they try hard to squeeze all essential items of an onsen hotel room into the smallest space possible, including placing the vanity unit in the living room opposite the sleeping platform, sharing space with a kettle and drinking water glasses. There is a shoe stand and a folding screen in-between the toilet and bathroom, which is hugely strange and inconvenient. Ours is a 12-tatami room, which I expect would be good for 3 people, but the reality is that it is so cramped that one would not want to spend much time in the room. Perhaps that’s the reason why the hotel provided a lot of public sitting areas. Yes, for guests to admire the magnificent view of the mountain stream, but also to stay out of the uncomfortable room. The room was a huge disappointment but there are some nice sides of the hotel. Dinner was really good; we had window seats facing the waterfall and the Aizu beef was very delicious. The public onsets, especially the outdoor ones, are nice, situated just next to the mountain stream. All in all, for the US680 I paid for three, it was not good value for money.
