“Relaxing experience meant for you to savour each moment.”

This ryokan/hotel is quite amazing as it has as many rooms as a hotel but maintains the feel of traditional ryokan. Impeccably clean, the limited staff do their best to fill your every request. “An excellent but somewhat secluded ryokan”

As far as ryokans go, Hibikino was one of the best we've stayed with, combining a stunningly beautiful interior; spotless, comfortable rooms; excellent hot spring baths; and the warm, courteous service one learns to expect from Japanese ryokans. This is however somewhat marred by its distance from … more

  • Yes, guests at Joshinnosato Hibikino have highlighted that: This ryokan/hotel is quite amazing as it has as many rooms as a hotel but maintains the feel of traditional ryokan. Impeccably clean, the limited staff do their best to fill your every request. Rooms are spacious and well equipped, they even give you two-toe socks and your own towel and bag to keep for the hot spring bath. They usually give you a free drink coupon when you arrive which is a nice touch. There are private hot spring for rent for about 3300yen for 45 minutes (time limit loosely enforced I believe especially if no one is after you) I had one included in my package and they were quite nice but very small, maybe 3 people could squeeze in but it was comfortable for 2. The location is a bit out of the way, slowly navigating it took 10-15 mins walk from the famous stairs so it is by no means far. However the sidewalks are small and slanted so pack light or you'll be losing your luggage. Let's get to the meals. If you Google translate some of these Japanese reviews you might be horrified to see the stereotypical thin Japanese complaining about the quantity of food. The food is delicate and presented beautifully, but there are only 1-3 bites of each dish, you get about 8-10 each meal. Each flavour is very very delicate, almost screaming for salt. However, I believe the chefs intention was for us to slow down and enjoy each bite, because you may not get another. The flavours delicate to make us really focus taste the flavour and feel the texture. So there is a measure of skill in crafting the meal this way, but it is definitely against the norm of many ryokan (which stuff you full, about half way into a 20 course meal which I also enjoy). So don't go to dinner starving and have the right mindset and you will love the food. As far as English level, it is either low or non existent. I can speak some Japanese which was fine, and the staff are very friendly so they will happily speak Japanese to you knowing you don't understand. Here is the jist if you come. 1. Wear socks and take off your shoes and leave your suitcase on the stone floor at the door, theyll grab it later. Say your last name, and maybe print your reservation to show them. After the straw mats there are slippers, put these on and accept the fact that this is now your footwear for the time you are here. 2. Come at 3pm or later, the hotel is in maintenance mode after the previous nights guests are gone. We came at 130 and they got us in our room at about 230. Don't take this as a sign of rudeness, the rooms take time to make so clean and perfect. Also they have a designated greeter standing there at 3 pm until all guests have arrived!!! She must have been standing there for hours the day we arrived. 3. They will sit you down and welcome you with tea and a delicious gorgeous transparent ice cream mochi. (We bought a box of 12 after and polished them off in the room). Nod ignorantly until they take out a dinner ticket, wait til they stop talking and tell them either 6 or 7 pm for dinner. (They ask you what time you want breakfast when you eat dinner, 7:30am is the earliest) 4. Take off your footwear when on straw mats, that's including in your room you ogre. They give you wooden sandals too which you can wear anywhere you wear slippers. You pick whatever you like. 5. Wear underpants with the robe they give you. Don't worry about tying it right or wrong(nobody really cares or will judge you), just cover your shame when you walk around the hotel. Also wear underwear with the robe, don't do around commando. 6.bathe in the stalls around d the hot springs before going in, but read an article on hotspring etiquette on another site, I already typed too much. Anyways all you English speakers give this place a try with the right mindset and you won't be disappointed.
