You should go here with very low expectations. The hotel, like the town itself, is pretty run down. However, you will never come across a nicer staff. I would like to give a particular thank you to Takayuki Sato who helped me via email to arrange some sightseeing plans in the area. He also drove me to the train station! There was a young woman who was also very kind and helpful. I think her name was Yuka and apologize if I am mistaken. She was great.

“Onsen bath sublime”

I spent 2 nights here, after birdwatching in the area , fantastic red crowned cranes and whopper swans, we arrived at the hotel. The room was perfectly adequate, toilet and shower. It is typical Japanese, tatami mats you must take off your shoes, the staff will lay your futon mattress out and bedding. I actually slept on 3 futons the floor can be very hard. It may be minus 15 outside but inside it was lovely and warm. I enjoyed the onsen , it is open to the public. Laying in the hot water in the steamy onsen room was very relaxing and refreshing. In the room you get a traditional Japanese garment to wear, I wore it to the onsen and to dinner. The food here is fantastic, if you are new to Japanese food you are in for a treat. I enjoyed my stay here , but the highlight was the onsen.

“Simple local hotel”

This is a simple, clean and comfortable hotel. My group of 4 stayed in a Japanese room and was of a reasonable size. After placing the 4 mattresses it was left with just a little space to walk around. This hotel has a public bath with water from the local underground sulphur water.

“Good sulfur hot spring, big room with beds. Slow wi fi lobby only”

This is a sulfur hot spring hotel, makes the skin smooth. The room is big, with beds, thank god! Cannot get up from tatami at night to go to bathroom. Only lobby has wi-fi, very inconvenient, super slow too.

If you drive to Kawayu, do be watchful as you may miss the turning into the driveway that lead into the parking area of the hotel. We did and had to drive a few rounds before we found it. If you drive to Kawayu, do be watchful as you may miss the turning into the driveway that lead into the parking area of the hotel. We did and had to drive a few rounds before we found it. The interior of the hotel though looks a bit new but tacky and dim. However, the staff with their limited English were as helpful as possible. The Japanese-styled room we stayed in was slightly larger than usual, clean and comfortable. The room came with 2 meals, breakfast and dinner. Though the breakfast was the usual Japanese fare, the dinner was good - it's kaiseki dinner! Of course, there was the onsen, afterall the hotel is located in Kawayu onsen area. Location wise, it's pretty convenient to access other nearby attractions such as Lake Akan and Lake Mashu. Overall, it's a comfortable ad comfortable stay.
