Onsen baths were super clean, like you do not see oily film and hair floating on top of the onsen water. The onsen waters took away fatigue and gave us smooth skin. Spacious lobby, with free snacks and drinks, tasty dinner and breakfast, staff can speak English. Hotel is just one hour drive away via Jozankei Kappa Liner bus which requires reservation in advance. Recommend it if you want to enjoy high quality onsen.

Stayed there for 1 night with breakfast and dinner included. Free shuttle bus from Sapporo is available but was full when we tried to book 1.5 months in advance. The hotel staff suggested we take the paid reservation only shuttle bus (1800 yen return) that stops right infront of the hotel. Room is very big for 2 people despite our room was the smallest on the 6th floor. Big bathroom and has separate toilet. There are 2 floors for onsen. The onsen on the 2nd floor(alternate days for men and women) was nicer and has massage chairs inside the resting area. We’ve also booked the private onsen but the one we’ve booked turned out to be an old pink bathtub. Breakfast was good and has wide range of food. Dinner was average but since we’ve only paid $300 aud for 2 pp for the stay, I wouldn’t complaint. They also have free wine and coffee(machine) certain time of the day which was very nice.

The whole hotel gives you a relaxed vibe. For one, you could sit and listen to music while enjoying free drinks and snacks in the lounge. For another, after taking a hot bath in the onsen, you can further relax yourself with the comfort of massage chair. The reception is welcoming and helpful (note: I speak a little bit of Japanese). The room is well-maintained and spacious. The supper is flavorful, while the breakfast buffet is also enjoyable.

The greatest merit of this place is its location in Jozankei which is one of the onsen capitals in Hokkaido about an hour bus ride from Saporro. My initial online inquiry was not promptly replied to and the reply was uncourteous and inhospitable but I gave it shot anyway given the generally good reviews. This is a ryokan style hotel that caters to bus loads of tourists and families. Don’t expect luxury and personalized service. The Japanese style tatami rooms and the bathrooms feel worn out and old and need serious updates. I used the public onsen bathrooms anyway and did not use the bathroom in my room at all. There was a strange musty odor in the hallway outside my room that smelled like pee. There are mountain views outside the window but the surroundings are all concrete hotel buildings. One day is enough and my only consolation was the onsen experience. The 2nd floor public onsen was a better albeit smaller alternative to the 12th floor public onsen. There is access to the onsen of the Shikanoyu sister hotel which is much larger and has more spa options. The cafeteria food and the staff/service was mediocre at best.
