“Might visit again”

Beautiful hotel and spa, good buffet for dinner and pet friendly. Staff was over the top, almost too much. Rooms were large considering it is a Japanese hotel. Noisey at night, next time I will have to ask for a room not next to the elevator. Located at the end of town but everything is a short… more

We booked a stay in Jozankei Onsen as it was the closest area of accommodation to Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort which we had planned to spend a few days skiing in. Our 3 night stay at Jozankei Tsuruga Resort was very pleasant and we particularly enjoyed: 1. The Food Our room plan came with breakfast and dinner, and the buffet didn't disappoint. There was a generous spread of both Japanese and International cuisine and the food was fresh and tasty. The breakfast buffet was sumptuous and we didn't need lunch on the hill at all. For guests staying more than 2 nights we were offered specially cooked dishes at dinner (apart from the standard buffet) which we appreciated. The small lobby bar was also delightful, offering good quality Japanese whisky and beer which we enjoyed while listening to a live performance by a Harpist in the lobby area. 2. The Onsen While we have visited more impressive outdoor onsens, the Jozankei Tsuruga onsen was very enjoyable. We were lucky to have been blessed with strong snowfall during our stay which enhanced the beauty of soaking outdoors in their uncovered onsen. There is also a smaller covered area for those who don't wish to be snowed on. Given the large size of the onsen facilities we didn't feel crowded in even during peak hours. It was clean and tidy. 3. The Room Our room was well appointed and spacious, and we were pleasantly surprised that there was ample space to open our luggage and move around freely. Since we were staying only a short period of time we didn't require cleaning, however, we were still able to access clean towels, utensils and room wear which were placed in a box outside our room daily. 4. Pillow Service The resort also has a pillow service offering guests a variety of sizes, material and fillings to choose from. It was a welcome relief for me as I prefer harder pillows and needless to say I enjoyed good quality sleep throughout our stay. When we first arrived at the resort there was no one available to help with our luggage from the car. Perhaps it was the off-peak timing of our arrival but thankfully there was a luggage cart available to use. We checked in directly at reception but there are also self-serviced kiosks to use when it gets crowded. On the whole, we found staff friendly and helpful with some who could speak good English as well as a dedicated Mandarin-speaking staff. Note though that there is no ski locker available even though it is curiously indicated on the floor plan inside the lift. It wasn't an issue for us as we could leave our skis and board in our rental car, and use a dedicated shoe locker to store our boots located by the lift lobby of our floor. Jozankei Tsuruga Resort is conveniently located and just a 35 min drive to Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort. Lawsons and Family Mart are also within walking distance of the resort. That said, the in-house "convenience store" was amply stocked with food and drinks which were not terribly overpriced to our surprise.
