We visited here in a group of 4 with 2 seniors among us. To better take care of the seniors (as they don't understand Japanese and are not fluent in English), we have booked a big room with private bath so that we could stay in the same room for the night. The environment of the premises is great and we got a good view from our room (facing the mountain). The staff are nice and helpful. No need to worry if you don't speak Japanese, the staff at the front desk are fluent in English! We had our dinner and breakfast in our room. The food are so delicious that we can't stop eating even we are already full. The onsen is very good too. We, the younger couple, have booked the private bath at 2/F (which you could use for 40 mins) while the seniors could use the private bath in our room. Both are very relaxing!

“First Time Visit But Really Worth!”

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you front desk staffs from Gekkoen, when I have communication problem with the local car rental company during my stay at Arima, they did help me a lots with their effort and patient. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you front desk staffs from Gekkoen, when I have communication problem with the local car rental company during my stay at Arima, they did help me a lots with their effort and patient. I will say Gekkoen Koeokan is wonderful you must visit at least once, food is good of course and you will feel easy breezy at the comfortable environment surrounding by nature beauty, staffs are helpful and make you delight during you stay!

“Superb customer service and nice Onsen”

I thought I left my iPhone in the room and called and emailed the hotel to inquire the evening after I checked out. They replied that nothing was found. However, after 2 weeks the hotel contacted me through email and told me they found a phone! I guess they must have found it during big cleaning. Anyways, they asked for my address in Hong Kong, and mailed it back to me without any charges (I offered it). All my friends are amazed about my luck and the superb customer service of the hotel. During our stay, the arrangement was also fantastic. On arrival, we were greeted at the entrance the moment we showed up. And they reserved the same table at the restaurant for our breakfast next morning when we finished our dinner. We had a 10-course dinner and the quality was great! The hotel has 3 Onsens and we love the one at the main building most because both the indoor and outdoor hotsprings are spacious. They have staggered opening hours so there’s always at least one Onsen open during our stay. I’d definitely come back to this hotel on my next visit to Arima Onsen!

In short: Not worth the price I have been to Japan for quite a number of times, and visiting an onsen/hotspring town has become a routine for me. The price of this onsen hotel was on the higher side, the cost of my stay was USD485 for 2 persons, with in-room breakfast and dinner included. The appearance of the hotel was old and required some maintenance, but the interior could still be considered as classic and Japanese-elegant. Room was well-equipped, clean and very spacious. There were several onsen locations within the hotel, and its sister-property, but I didn't think they were of great difference. All of the locations were with similar view or no view at all, and the onsen water felt like the same for me (perhaps I was not an expert). Private onsen required an extra JPY2200, which was usually free in other onsen hotels. Dinner was served individually in room over a 2-hour duration, in my opinion, which was a bit long. It felt like a slow service restaurant rather than a high-end dining experience. The tempura was served in room temperature, and the oil had already become visible, implying the tempura had probably waited for some time in room temperature. Other dishes were good, but nothing too exceptional. Same for the breakfast as well. Vending machine could be found in the lobby of the hotel, but all alcoholic drinks must be sold through hotel souvenir shop / in-room minibar, price was reasonable though. One free cup of Asahi beer for each guest from 5-7pm, which was generous. Hotel provided shuttle service to ropeway station, bus station and JR station on-request, which was very convenient as there was no need to wait for a particular time. Staff service was excellent. Everything in this hotel was OK, with some "good" and "excellent", but it was still a very average hotel with nothing too exception. Therefore, I did not consider it worthed its high-price.
