“Clean modern hotel with amazing views and friendly staff”

We were traveling as a family of 5 with kids (4–10 yo) and we were trying to find the right Ryokan for our family. We originally booked a more traditional ryokan and made the switch over to Hanaori and we were glad that we did. Our kids loved it, they loved the buffet style food and sleeping on the… more

“Do your research before staying here”

I wish we had done more research about staying at a Japanese Onsen. There are many customs that we did not understand- like wearing your pj's and robe around the hotel and to dinner. It was lovely and the rooms were great. Service was ok but not great. Food was buffet style and good.

“A nice hotel that falls short in important ways”

TLDR: A nice hotel that falls short in a few ways compared to what is presented/promised at time of booking, including putting people into a lesser room than what they prepaid for and then refusing to assist with some sort of refund after the fact. I would recommend considering other onsen hotels i… more

  • Yes, guests at Hakone Ashinoko Hanaori have highlighted that: We were traveling as a family of 5 with kids (4–10 yo) and we were trying to find the right Ryokan for our family. We originally booked a more traditional ryokan and made the switch over to Hanaori and we were glad that we did. Our kids loved it, they loved the buffet style food and sleeping on their own japanese style mattress beds on the straw mat floor. This hotel feels modern and clean, which was what we were looking for. The views are amazing from the lobby. Our room was made for five so it was very spacious. The kids were able to have their own room in the living space. The staff would lay out all their beds on the floor while we were out and there were sliding doors to block the living room, the bedroom, and hallway space. They had plenty of slippers for you to use. They’ll give you slippers for walking around their hotel to go eat, slippers to use in your room, some for the bathroom, as well as some for walking outside to your balcony. If you need anything, you can just call the first desk and they’ll send it over shortly. Our room came with the private onsen, which was really nice. It was always hot and easy to use from our shower. They have an automated system which can detect when the water is low and well just automated refilled the tub. We were on the 2nd floor of the last building and we were able to see a view of the lake with some trees in the way. Higher rooms would have better views, but might be annoying to access the restaurant because not all the elevators would take you to the restaurant. You would always have to head to the 2nd floor to access the lobby elevator to get to the buffet on the 4th floor. If your room does not come with a private onsen, you can book a private onsen for 3000 yen. You’ll have 40 mins to use it. It is a bigger bath than the one in our room. There is a water dispenser, indoor shower, toilet and vanity space for you to get ready. I would try to book before you get there to get the time slot you like. However, if you’re comfortable being fully naked with some strangers, the public baths do offer a variety of baths types (clear and cloudy) along with a steam room access. Two different traditional pajama sets were provided for adults, but for kids they only provide the yukatas, which they already have placed in our closet in our room vs for adults you can pick them up on the 2nd floor right when you get out of the lobby elevator. Yukata are great for photos opps, but the samue style pj is a two piece pj which has a pocket, which was great for our phones. We personally thought that the buffet style breakfast and dinner was less stressful with kids. They could just go up and grab the food they liked. They had a very good selection of western and Japanese food. If you like to drink alcohol, they have plenty to choose from, such as sake, wine, beer, and some other hard liquor. Breakfast is first come first serve so you can go early to beat the crowd. For dinner you’ll need to scan a QR code they give to you when you check in to pick a dinner time slot. We stayed there for two nights as we were able to pick a different time slot for each day. The dinner booking opens up at noon. It was really nice dining with a view of the lake each day. A note about wearing the yukatas or samue to the buffet, most tend to wear them, but it’s perfectly fine not to wear them as well. We saw quite a few guests just wearing their regular clothing to dine as well. We personally didn’t wear them to breakfast at all because we wanted to be able to just leave right after our meal without having to go back to our room to change. The location was perfect for us because it was just 5 minutes walk away from the sightseeing cruise and ropeway station. Don’t use Google to guide you to the station, it made us walk to the main street which was unnecessary since the hotel has a walking route right behind the beverage/gift shop on the lobby floor. Honestly, we had a very memorable stay and would consider bringing our extended family here again.
