“Do your research before staying here”

I wish we had done more research about staying at a Japanese Onsen. There are many customs that we did not understand- like wearing your pj's and robe around the hotel and to dinner. It was lovely and the rooms were great. Service was ok but not great. Food was buffet style and good.

Hotel located overlooking Lake Ashi in Hakone. Views beautiful - very serene and calming place with onsen. Onsen is separated by gender. Private onsen available at an extra cost. Food is buffet style, we chose half board. Dishes on offer excellent for both breakfast and dinner. Alcoholic drinks included. Rooms compact but well designed. Nice powerful hot shower. Small towels provided. Kimono and/or Japanese style pyjamas and slippers to wear provided throughout your stay.

TLDR: A nice hotel that falls short in a few ways compared to what is presented/promised at time of booking, including putting people into a lesser room than what they prepaid for and then refusing to assist with some sort of refund after the fact. I would recommend considering other onsen hotels in the area. Full Review: This is a beautiful hotel but it has some problems. The very crowded buffet is the opposite of relaxing, which an onsen hotel in a resort town should be. The buffet food is very average, nothing special. The process of getting food is chaotic and the restaurant is very, very crowded and loud. Probably because it is full of foreigners. I am one myself, but I know how to dine politely in a polite country like Japan. That said, the onsen itself is very good and relaxing. But I’m not sure that offsets the dining experience. Second, check in was chaotic. When several people got off the shuttle bus from the train station, we were first in line. We were directed to the check in kiosks, which could not find our reservations. We then had to get in the back of the line to check in at the lobby desk. By the way, I did not see the check in kiosk work for anyone while I was there. That would not have been so bad, but then the three separate reservations made on booking.com by our group somehow got linked. We did not all reserve the same room type and the hotel switched two of the rooms and put people in a room type they did not pay for. This is inexcusable and I don’t understand why the hotel could not figure out who should be in what room. Probably because check in was very chaotic overall. Because we had a long trip with many hotels, it was not apparent to us at the time that the switch was made. But after reviewing their booking.com reservations, the group that was put in the lower priced, smaller room overlooking the parking lot realized they did not get what they paid for (a higher priced, larger room with a view of the lake). When they contacted the hotel after checkout, the hotel made some claim of not being able to review booking photos that were shared, claimed that people were given rooms they were not (the room numbers they stated by party name did not match the room keys that were given to the two parties) and suggested to try to contact the other people that got their room by mistake. For what? A refund of the difference? Again, the rooms should never have been linked by the hotel, leading to a mix up by the hotel at check in. Fortunately, booking.com did the right thing and gave a 100% refund to the aggrieved party. I hope they will recover from the hotel.
