We stayed here one night as part of our tour of Japan. It is easy to find from Lake Ashi and bus stops are close by - just be aware that it takes about an hour on the bus to get back to Hakone train station, so we had to get the bus at 8.20am to guarantee that we could catch our Shinkansen at 10am, not ideal! The building itself is modern but the rooms are traditional in style, although with modern bathrooms and tv, etc. It's certainly a different experience, and the staff were really friendly and helpful! I'm glad that we were only staying one night, though, as being Westerners totally unused to this style of furniture we found both sitting and sleeping quite uncomfortable, even though the futon mattresses were pretty thick. Dinner and breakfast were both served in our room, and were traditional Japanese multi-dish meals - fish, rice, vegetables, miso soup etc - beautifully presented, and the ladies who served us explained what we were eating. My lactose intolerance was very carefully catered for. I would stay here again, but only for one night, because I don't think my back would cope with any longer.

we’re finally trying out Ryokan style hotels an acquired taste, that the sleeping futons are set up and put away for more living space – drinking tea, snacking or even web surfing sitting on the tatami location-wise, this was great for touring Lake Ashi. the Hakone Pirate Ship wharf was a stroll away. but most shops other than a local grocer close by night-time. we max-ed our Hakone Freepass for the bus ride to raid/hunt for dinner

“Quiet, comfortable, close to lake and sightseeing boat, but just be aware this is in Hakone-machi”

Quiet, great location across the street from lake, great access the sightseeing boat taking you to the Hakone ropeway to see Mt. Fuji and the floating red Tori. This was lovely! Quiet, great location across the street from lake, great access the sightseeing boat taking you to the Hakone ropeway to see Mt. Fuji and the floating red Tori. This was lovely! Also, really nice to walk by the lake, to nearby shrine. Cleam, comfortable rooms in traditional ryokan style. Nice onsen.It's all about expectations - We'd thought we were going to have easy access from Tokyo to main Hakone. Turns out this is in Hakone-machi, a village town which was extra hour on bus from Osawara train station. Not much in terms of restaurants or other stuff except geared for day tourists on tour buses from Tokyo. But we went in winter, not necessarily peak season.

There are some food options in the area as well though this is far from the main Hakone train station - Meals are an Experience: Nice to have the Japanese meal experience. Breakfast was in a large dining room, Dinner is served in the room. - Onsen: There is an indoor and outdoor one. Doesn't have much of a view but definitely sufficient and enjoyable in the cold Cons: - Old Place: The place does need some updating as it is definitely aging - Luggage Friendly Pavement Required: There should be some paved road that is easy for guests to pull their luggage into the hotel. Unfortunately, it is all rough stone that could easily damage the luggage - No Luggage Storage: If you wish to store it till the afternoon, it will not be possible and will have to either bring it with you or pay for the luggage transport service to the station Likely to try another place if I go back to Hakone!

We stayed at Yugiriso as a group of 6 people in 3 rooms. The ryokan was very easy to get to from the sightseeing cruise across Lake Ashi, which was great as the weather during winter was very cold. Check-in went very smoothly and we were taken to our rooms to be served tea have the facilities explained. The lady who attended to all of us was an older woman who was extremely friendly and seemed genuinely delighted to have us as guests, which made us feel welcomed and relaxed. The rooms, as other reviews have noted, have definitely aged considerably. The tatami was stained in areas, the wallpaper was peeling, and the fluorescent tube light in the room didn’t feel very inviting when arriving at night. Considering how far back the reviews mentioning the peeling wallpaper, etc. go, it’s a bit disappointing to see that they haven’t kept the ryokan up to the same standard as the food and service they provide. Dinner was served in a private dining room (instead of straight to our rooms since we were a group of 6) and was very traditional and delicious! Again, the same attendant served us and did her best to explain the dishes despite the language barrier. Breakfast was slightly less private as we shared the dining room with a few other groups of guests, but that wasn’t an issue for us. While there was a toilet and sink in the room, as stated during booking, there was no shower or bath, so you’ll have to use the public onsen to bathe if you need to. The bath was great, if not a bit small. Unfortunately there were only two hairdryers in the changing room and none in our personal rooms, which meant there could potentially be a queue to dry your hair after a dip in the onsen, depending on how busy it is. Overall, we did have a great time at Yugiriso, but considering the price we paid, the facilities could certainly stand to be updated or replaced.
