This was a really nice, old-fashioned, stylish hotel with beautiful and interesting artworks everywhere, as well as lovely floral arrangements in the lobby areas and even the lifts! (The main lobby with its lofty ceiling and chandeliers as well as the art and flowers was amazing.) I stayed for two nights in a superior corner twin room with a great view of Kumamoto Castle - top of the tenshu, part of another building and some of the reconstruction work underway, as well as part of a moat and a park. The castle was lit until midnight. A room on a higher floor would've provided an even better view of the honmaru buildings. My accommodation had a decent amount of space and was well-designed. I liked having doors between the bedroom/living area and the lobby/bathroom. There was just the one bedside cabinet between the twin beds, but it was an adequate size. There was a nice big desk and a chair of just the right height, as well as two other chairs and a table. Lots of drawers and clothes hanging space. Lamps and ceiling lights provided a suitable amount of light (not too dim!). WiFi worked well and there was a wide choice of TV channels. There was an ample number of power sockets, and they were in practical places such as at the desk. I loved the big three-sided mirror in the bathroom, and there were towel racks! Yes! So many hotels hardly have any these days. Complimentary items included good quality teabags (green, camomile and black), drip coffee, bottles of water and facial toiletries. And the best room slippers ever! Housekeeping was excellent, with nothing forgotten (for example, little things like replacement of shoe cleaning mitts), and I was pleased to be given two bath towels and two hand towels each day (some hotels have cut me back to one of each because I travel solo). I had the Japanese set breakfast both mornings and it was very nice. Staff were pleasant and helpful. The hotel is across the road from the castle park, and also nearby there are shrines, temples, museums, many shops and shopping complexes, and eateries. Bus stops too. Arriving and departing I took taxis to and from the station, with the hotel arranging the one on the morning I checked out. Would definitely stay again, thank you!

Stayed in the Castle hotel where we experienced exceptional helpfulness and service as we do at all our accommodation in Japan though this rates as one of the best. We had a room with a castle view, we could see the very top above the trees. It was lovely seeing it lit up at night. We were looked after so well. We had everything we needed and staff went above and beyond in looking after our needs. We enjoyed chatting with Chris. Highly recommended.

Kumamoto Hotel Castle offers a great stay with a blend of comfort, convenience, and stunning views of the iconic Kumamoto Castle. The hotel is well-located, making it easy to explore the city's historical landmarks and attractions. The rooms are clean and spacious, providing a relaxing environment after a day of sightseeing. The highlight is definitely the view—whether from the lobby or your room, you'll be treated to a breathtaking look at the majestic castle. While the hotel might not have the most modern amenities, it’s a solid, reliable choice for anyone visiting Kumamoto. If you're in the area, the combination of location and view makes it a top pick!

The hotel's location was the main reason why we booked the place. It was close to both Kumamon Square and Kumamotojo, the 2 things we wanted to do in Kumamoto. However, note that even though it's right next to Kumamotojo, it still takes a 15~20minute walk to the entrance because it's on the other side of the castle keep during it's repairs. The staff are wonderful and very helpful, standard level of service in Japan is just one step above every other country. The staff did valet parking for me without extra charge, and was quite helpful in helping us to get to different attractions and restaurants. Overall, the hotel is very dated and the rooms are in dire need of a full renovation. I think that is why the rates were quite reasonable. For a hotel this caliber (probably 5 stars when it was first built), we only paid around 10,000 yen per night. The issue is the rooms are really old and the carpet looks dirty and ripped. parts of the washrooms were so old the faucet looked like it's from the early 90s and with small amounts of molds in the creases. Because the hotel is old, the ventilation isn't the greatest either. One of our rooms although was non-smoking, we could smell other room's cigarette smell in our room. Overall, I don't really recommend this hotel because it's really dated, but if you are on a budget and want close amenity it's worth a shot. The staff are nice too so I feel bad for not recommending the hotel, but at the end of the day, there are just better options in Kumamoto today.
