I had a great few nights staying at First Cabin in Kyoto. A central location, lots of privacy and space in the ‘cabins’ and everyone seemed to respect the rules around being quiet in the sleeping areas. Good clean facilities, including toiletries, towels etc. There isn’t really much communal space and there are no windows, hence 4 stars.

Near to Shake Shack burger, Kamo's vege-buffet restaurant, Eggs n thngs (hawaiian pancake restaurant/cafe) etc and also near to a shop which u can rent costumes like Kimono From (green line karasuma line)kyoto station to shijo station or to karasuma station (reddish pinky line ie Hankyu line) U exit from Shijo's exit5 ie bukkoji 佛光寺dori (be it Shijo or karasuma station, they r all connected underground , which means u have two choice of train lines in kyoto) I like the fact that you are allowed to bring your lugg to the cabin, the ONLY thing which is not guaranteed is you cannot lock the room In a typical capsule hotel, no matter how many nights you have booked, you have to checkout and return all your stuff to the main frontdesk storage area (but for this , you wouldn't have to) Quite a "budget" option, provided it is not the peak period Tips: Laundry (while it is cheap 300Y to use the washing machine) , u better start queueing for it at the right time as there is ONLY one machine it is only 100Y to use the dryer but i think u need to make it run longer to fully dry your clothes (if not dry it in your "cabin" instead) It has other outlets in kyoto (eg Arashiyama - if u don't mind the secluded site) and thru out Jp too Note: Saw a korean guy arguing with the manager about this , as i have already totally expected it (as an environmental conservationalist, i dont really need staff to clean up my room, hence i requested for NO tidying for my 3 nite stay) the moment u requested for no cleaning/tidying, they will not bother to change your towel and even if u requested for cleaning, towels may not be changed too . In fact, every request for additional towel or clothings will be chargeable, just be generous about it and pay for it! How costly would that be? If not, bring your own! great flaw if allocated to the floor without lift: Depending on which floor you are situated at, most likely gentlemen allocated to business class is to carry their lugg to the floor as lift do not serve to that area, there could be at time that u need to climb stairs to get to the reception/front desk or to certain services Plus: even though it only has a small lift (of the building) to get to the hotel floor, the building lift is never congested or required a long wait to get up or down! Amazing!! On the whole, i deemed it a 3.5 star

I stayed here for three nights in a superior cabine. It is an excellent budget accommodation in central Kyoto, only few steps away from the main shopping street and markets. The superior cabins are actually little rooms with everything you might be looking for: Large bed, table, mirror, hangers, locker and even a TV. In your cabin you will find a pyjama, slippers, towels, toothbrush and bathing sponge. The dorms are separated by gender and so are the bathrooms. Showers are located on a different floor and there is even a bathtub if you want to relax. You will also find shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, face cleaning lotion and more. You can get a breakfast in the morning or only coffee from a Nespresso machine. The shared spaces include a lounge and never really felt crowded. The only setback is that there are no windows, which makes it feel a bit as if you were in a bunker.

I understand that a lot of people are concerned about sleeping in a coffin like space, I am one of them. So naturally, I booked the "first class" cabin in order to feel less claustrophobic! The room is quite spacious, it is similar to a small bedroom, The interior is nicely decked out and new. All the common space, the toilet area are very clean. The only thing that I did not get used to, is that there is no window in the room, so it was quite difficult for me to get up in the morning, or know the time of day. But apart from that, it was a pleasant stay!

On my trip to Japan and its various cities my friend suggested that we should try out their famous Pod stays. When I mentioned it would be difficult for me to adjust she agreed for a hostel kind of cabin stay accommodation. That is how I experienced my ‘Fist Cabin Stay’ which was more like a shared accommodation. I must confess I was not very happy with the arrangement. I mean its fine that some people can adjust to community living but I don’t fall in that category. The property had common shared spaces like bathroom and kitchen. It was new for me so I had to adjust just for the experience sake after all it was just for this one time. I won’t say negative things about my stay because I am sure other people / tourists cherish this kind of arrangement but not me. The cabin was too small, though security was no issue. Wi-Fi worked fine and breakfast was just cereals and bread toast. Toiletries were on the house so were clean towels. Reception was warm and you had to handover your keys every time you step out and then collect it on your way back.
