“Loved it”

In a quiet neighborhood. Beautiful interior garden perfect for relaxing. Room was spotless and all is very well maintained. The bath is huge and pleasant. Fantastic very helpful hosts. The Japanese breakfast is not to be missed.

“Excellent stay”

I've been to Japan several times over the years and have stayed in a handful of ryokans whenever I've visited Kyoto. Nishiyama Ryokan is far and away my favorite one of all the ones I've stayed at and a major highlight of the trip for both my mom and sister. All in all we were blown away by the experience there To start off, I think one of the things I appreciate the most about our stay here was the opportunities and invitation to really engage with and experience Japanese culture. During our short recent stay, they had arranged matcha tea ceremonies in the morning during which time we were able to enjoy tea being made for us and also be able to make the tea. One of the nights, they had someone come playing a koto (traditional instrument) and even allowed gave my sister an opportunity to play it herself. Had we had the opportunity to stay longer, there were more events listed on the calendar at the front desk. All in all it feels nice to be able to have the opportunity to really experience parts of Japanese culture in a city as historic as Kyoto Next big thing I noticed was their service was on another level. They're a small ryokan with a fairly small staff, but you can tell each person really puts in an effort to make sure guests are taken care of. At one point, I genuinely began to think they may all be related and it's a family owned business because of the passion and effort each had put in. Kaita and Kimura were the people I engaged with the most during our stay and I would like to recognize how excellent they were during the stay. They were noticing small things and anticipating needs before a request was even made. I do regret not getting the names of more of the staff because they all deserve a special individual shout out since they were all going above and beyond. Part of the service being excellent was how accommodating they are as a ryokan. For instance, with the Japanese breakfast, I don't have dietary restrictions but my mom and sister are both vegetarian. They were able to accommodate this and created special breakfasts so they were able to eat (food, btw, was EXCELLENT and we sacrificed plans for breakfast at a restaurant my sister found to eat breakfast in the hotel again). The ability to be flexible with the breakfast is not something that I've encountered at other ryokans previously. Another example of their accommodation is that their onsen was open to those with tattoos for any reason. While I don't have any personally, I know from previous experience with friends at other ryokans that this isn't something particularly common and, at minimum, requires people to get covers for their tattoos On the topic of the onsen, I really appreciate how well maintained it was. Highly recommend it if you have the opportunity For the major other things that people care about: The rooms were all big, spacious, and clean. We had a room with traditional futons which were extremely comfortable and gave us some of the best sleep during our entire trip. Bathrooms were clean and well maintained and spacious. As someone who is 6'4, I will point out that I didn't worry about hitting my head on any doorways during my stay here (not something I can say for other ryokans I've stayed at and very much have smacked my forehead in the middle of the night plenty of times) The location of the ryokan is also great. You're in a neighborhood enough that you get peace and quiet to rest but close enough to things that you aren't so removed. It's maybe a 10 min walk in any direction to get to tourist spots/attractions, shopping, and public transport if you need to get somewhere further away All in all, definitely recommend this place if you're going to Kyoto and are looking to stay at a ryokan. I know I'll definitely be staying with them again the next time I find myself in Kyoto
