On our first trip to Japan, I wanted to try staying at a traditional Ryokan in addition to regular, Western style hotels. We stayed at 2 on our trip, Kadensho and Toshiharu. Of the 2, Toshiharu was by far more traditional and memorable. This venue keeps the Edo period feel of the building as much as possible. We slept on the floor on tatami mats and there is a phone but no TV in the room. Our room was very spacious with 2 rooms that you could separate with a screen. There was also a balcony area. There is no bathroom or shower in your room. Rather there are 2 Onsen style bathing rooms with a shower and soaking tub with a communal double sink area. So you do have to leave your room to go to the bathroom but I felt this added to the charm of the experience. You reserve your time to use the shower and tub which worked out find for us. We just ended up using the shower late in the evening around 11pm and then got up ready to start our day the next morning. They brought us breakfast to our room the both days we stayed there and that was very fun also. The breakfast is traditional Kaiseki style but it was very good. They served fish, rice, egg, miso soup, pickled vegetables and the like. The staff greets you when you come "home" and when you leave, the mama-san walks you to the front door and waits and watches you leave, just like the Geisha of old. We absolutely LOVED our stay here and it was the most memorable of all the places we stayed during our trip to Japan. I definitely recommend this Ryokan and would certainly stay here again. A few of the staff speak good English but some of them don't. But we were able to easily communicate with our broken Japanese and Google translate.

The most peaceful and tranquil experience ever in a hotel for us, the staff were so friendly and accommodating to ensure we had the most relaxing and lovely stay, The breakfast was amazingly good and cooked to perfection, and the Honeymoon suite was stunning and comfortable. 10 out of 10 experience without a doubt. We even got a wedding gift from the staff and we want to thank them for being so sweet and thoughtful.

“Traditional, luxurious and attentive”

Gorgeous, traditional Ryokan with amazing, friendly staff. Japanese breakfasts were stunning and set you up for a full day of sightseeing. Our family of four had the Aoi room, which has its own toilet and shower, and Tsuki room which overlooks the front garden. Both were cosy, clean and relaxing.… more

Gorgeous, traditional Ryokan with amazing, friendly staff. Japanese breakfasts were stunning and set you up for a full day of sightseeing. Our family of four had the Aoi room, which has its own toilet and shower, and Tsuki room which overlooks the front garden. Both were cosy, clean and relaxing. While it was nice having our own toilet in the night I wouldn’t get too hung up on it. We never used the shower - the two shared bathrooms with showering facilities and traditional deep cedar Japanese baths, which easily accommodate two people, were kept impeccably clean and were oh so relaxing at the end of a long day of walking around shrines and castles. The booking system for these works really well. There are multiple toilets on both levels - all accessed by undercover walkways. On this basis I’d probably go with the Tsuki room over Aoi given its beautiful garden view. There are some lovely touches at Toshiharu - the reading room/library and the small, cosy breakfast room (which you can book in 30 minute slots) are lovely and decked out with fruit, snacks, coffee and tea. All in all a brilliant accommodation destination in Kyoto and well worth the experience for some traditional Japanese bathing and exceptional hospitality. Couldn’t recommend more highly.
