I stayed at the Komagane Kogan Resort Linx in June 2012 while on a business trip to Japan. The hotel is located in the foothills of the mountains (Japan Alps) near Komagane, Japan. This is a restful hotel. Quiet. Peacefully located. Breakfast and dinner were tasty at the hotel restaurant. The room was larger than most Japanese hotels offer. This is an older property but is well-maintained. TV only has Japanese TV channels. Internet was free and worked well with the cable (tucked behind the TV). A spring-fed pond is located adjacent to the hotel. Hiking trails are nearby. A spa is located (hot springs) in the hotel, although I did not use it. This would be a good hotel to get away from the business of the larger Japan cities.

“Poorly soundproofed rooms!”

We stayed two nights. Doors are rather meant as a visual protection. Whatever sound is on the corridor, it’s clearly audible in the room. The doors close with a bang. It’s difficult to hang clothes, no closet, only three hangers at a kind of mirror behind the door. Other than this the hotel has been renovated not too long ago, it is clean, Onsen good, and it is conveniently located with a bus stop directly in front of the hotel. The buffet style food was excellent and staff extraordinarly friendly, helpful and attentive, they deserve 6 stars instead of five. So, if you sleep like a log wherever you lay your head, the Hotel is certainly a good choice.

“Cute little resort that's in need of a bit of TLC”

Komagane isn't quite on the usual non-Japanese tourist radar. We were here for one night because it was a convenient pitstop between Tsumago (on the Nakasendo Trail) and Matsumoto, where we were headed to next. Having said that, between our broken Japanese and the front desk's serviceable English we managed to make ourselves understood enough that they could help us make reservations for later in the trip. The establishment isn't that big, perhaps 40 rooms or so. It has all the usual Japanese resort accoutrements, like a hotspring bath, buffet restaurant, gift shop, laundromat et al. All in all the facilities were pretty good. Unfortunately, our room was in a state of disrepair. The sofa was sagging and there was no closet, just a fixture on the wall with four coat hangers. The bathroom was tiny. Be warned: the room is obviously not designed for international travellers with large bags. Breakfast was delicious. The pork curry, a specialty of the area, is particularly worth the calories. We bought some of it back from the gift shop to take home.
