My family and travelled to Niigata at the end of April 2023 and had the pleasure of staying at Hotel Okura Niigata. Prior to the trip, I had reached out to them via email to inquire about coordinating a van + driver for us (6 of us) so that we could go visit some sake breweries and to make dinner reservations for us at a nearby restaurant. The concierge team was amazing and booked a large van (jumbo taxi) and driver for the day. they also ensured that the van could accommodate a folding wheelchair for one group member that needed it. The van and driver arrived on time and was quite reasonably priced. Great experience that was made possible by the hotel team! Upon return to the hotel, we realized we had left some items on the van - the hotel called the taxi company and coordinated the return of our items. Beyond these experiences, the hotel itself is a bit older but rooms are comfortable and fairly spacious for a hotel room in Japan. Location is great and the breakfast buffet was one of the better ones we had on this trip. If I should ever travel back to Niigata, I will most definitely be staying here. The hotel and team won my business by going above and beyond...even for Japan standards of customer service! Domo arigatogozaimashita!!!

“Hotel Okura Niigata - nice, handy, good rooms, good staff”

Niigata is not on the beaten path for tourists, although it should be. I will fully credit Chris Broad with putting the idea in our heads to visit the sake bar/store in the JR train station as a bucket list item. Niigata is not on the beaten path for tourists, although it should be. I will fully credit Chris Broad with putting the idea in our heads to visit the sake bar/store in the JR train station as a bucket list item. Hotel Okura is a 15 minute walk from the JR station, but only a few minutes on the bus. The hotel is on the bank of the river, adjacent to the Bandai Bridge, and is central to everything in the city. There are ample shops and cafes and restaurants nearby as well as large and small shops. The hotel itself is well staffed, clean, well kept, and the elevators come quickly. There is a large foyer if one wanted to meet a guest there, there is also driveway with taxis waiting to take you anywhere you need to go. We asked one of the staff to recommend an onsen within the city and he explained where it was, gave us great directions and offered to arrange the taxi for us. There is a restaurant and bar in the hotel, giving it a vibe of a grander hotel than what we'd stayed in up to this point. Everything is within walking distance, but to save some time take a bus. We'd definitely stay there again.

A highlight of my two-night stay was a really great river view which I much enjoyed. The hotel is riverside, and there was a lovely walk along there among blossoming cherry trees. There are shops and eateries nearby, and a walk across the nearby Bandai Bridge leads to more. The JR Station is about a 20 minute walk, and many sights are also within walking distance. For instance, the fabulous Saito Villa is around 20 minutes walk, the Niigata City Art Museum about the same, and the West Coast Park by the sea about 30. My deluxe double room had a lot going for it as well as the view - heaps of space, attractive wood, many drawers, a big desk with chair, heaps of bench space in both the bedroom/living room and the bathroom, nice slanted mirrors, big wardrobe, a safe, tv and coffee machine (yay!). The bed was comfortable and by the window there was a 2-seater lounge with a small table and lounge chair. The fridge contained a mini bar and there was complimentary water as well as two types of teabags. There was a large bath and complimentary shampoo, conditioner and body wash (small bottles), and a huge sink. The toilet had a separate space rather than being squeezed between the bath and sink. A mistake I made was choosing the wrong type of cleaning - I chose "simple" not realising it meant cups and glasses wouldn't be replaced...not ideal as there wasn't detergent for washing them up. And seemingly, it also meant toilet paper wasn't replaced, although that may have been an oversight. Towels were on the thin side, and the bathroom light could've been brighter. There weren't many power sockets. Breakfast was good, and the staff were great. This is a grand old hotel, a bit faded in places but that, and the minor niggles I've mentioned, didn't much matter.....I'd be happy to stay again.

“Comfortable hotel in good location ”

Throughly enjoyed my stay at Hotel Okura Niigata. Rooms are old but comfortable. Service is excellent, breakfast was great with such fresh delicious food. Hotel is close to shopping areas and a range of restaurants.
