“Small but perfectly formed”

Really liked this hotel. Great location for exploring the city using metro. Good value - we paid less than €100/night. Room and bathroom very compact but had everything we needed, v comfortable. A window that opens and heated toilet seat were a bonus! Breakfast included was excellent too.

Average is the best I can do. I would have given it only 2 stars but it's my fault for not understanding to what lengths the hotel puts emphasis on being environmentally friendly. That's fine, of course, it's just not for this 70+ year old traveler. I don't think any of their rooms are sized for 3 "westerners". I feel safe saying that because we had 3 different rooms. When we booked our trip we decided to start and end in Tokyo and stick with the same hotel instead of switching (the 3rd room is because certain items in the 2nd room weren't working and we were allowed to switch). There are no dressers in the rooms so we were literally living out of our suitcases. The air conditioning will not activate until you put your room key in a slot by the door. In July's heat, that was *very* inconvenient, because the room was musty when we first walked in and we had to wait a long time for it to get comfortable. Again, I understand they want to be environmentally friendly, I just wasn't ready for more heat after coming out of the heat. A free "breakfast" is included with your rate, but it's truly the barest of fares with cereals, breads & some pastries, milk, iced coffee and juices, yogurt and some fruit. The eating area has only 2 tables with about 10 small stools (no chairs) and a bar wall line with about 8 tall stools. There isn't a real lobby. Instead, there's an automated check-in/check out area "hosted" by "real" automatons. Just be aware, they move and talk, which can be a little frightening if you're not prepared. If you need to talk to a living being, there is a staff phone available, though it's next to the eating area and not at the front desk. On the plus side, the staff is very friendly and speak some English, still, it might be helpful to get the Google Translate app on your phone to use in a pinch. Other pluses include free wifi, a laundromat on site (fee), a vacuum seal machine for any oversized souvenirs you might want to bring home (fee), Yamato transport services if you want to forward your luggage to your next hotel, and ample supplies (toothbrushes with toothpaste, wash cloths, razors and robes) available in front of the elevator to take up to your room. Another big advantage is the hotel's location literally next to a grocery store with 2 big 7/11-type stores within walking distance, all staying open until 11pm, so if you're feeling peckish you can buy an inexpensive treat, heat it up in the hotel's microwave and enjoy it in your room. I'm sure the austerity of Henn na will satisfy like minded clientele, and as much as I like the staff, I'll look for a different hotel if I visit Tokyo again.
