I booked this hotel on an OLTA at a very modest price. It's in a great location in Sussex Gardens, about two blocks from Hyde Park and less than a 10 minute walk to Paddington Station and countless stores and restaurants. Some have suggested the area is dodgy and even loud. I didn't experience that at all. In fact, I walked it at all hours and found it pleasant and quiet. A rather friendly gentleman checked me in and provided me a key I was required to leave at the front desk when out of the room. I understand the practice since the keys are metal but I don't care for it. I was given the oft-reviewed basement room so was concerned, particularly with the musty smell I encountered as I approached it. However, the room itself didn't smell at all. There definitely were problems, ranging in degree. The bed was a thin, cheap and heavily worn mattress that sagged in the middle. I'm easy going but it needs to be replaced. The TV was fine, with enough channels, but it was placed too high which made it hard to watch. The window didn't latch. Anyone could have come through. The wifi was usable but poor. There were mismatched carpet patches outside the bathroom, clearly due to water damage. IN the tiny bathroom, the floor felt hollow in places, under the tile. It was heated by an old radiator and you had to lie on the bed and reach back in the corner to activate or adjust it. The shower head was on a slider with no tension so I had to stick cardboard in it to keep it raised. The toilet ran. I only reported one or two problems to management that I felt easily could be fixed, since the rest were quite obvious and I'm sure they were just not able to resolve. Towels and toiletries were basic and fine. Remaining few pieces of furniture were old and worn. There was a small armoire that held a blanket and hair dryer. There was a kettle too. Lighting all worked and was more than adequate. Some complained about breakfast and I don't see how. There was toast, juice, tea/coffee, poached eggs, beans and fresh sliced bacon. It was served by a very friendly woman, who also cleaned the rooms and it was one of the highlights of my stay. What do you want? Eggs Benedict and champagne? The breakfast, convenient location and friendly staff, all did much to offset the poor condition of the room. This place isn't for everyone but if your tastes are simple and you're easy going, you'll find it acceptable.

This place is as far removed from the Ritz as it gets! However, it’s central and surrounded by bars, restaurants and transport links. It was shabby in places definitely but the room was very clean as were the towels and bed linen. The ‘Full English Breakfast’ was ‘English’ but not particularly ‘Full!’ 1 slice of bacon, 1 fried egg and a spoonful of beans. Toast was unlimited though so we filled our boots until we weren’t hungry anymore in preparation for another day of pounding the pavements and jumping on and off the tube. The bathroom is tiny but again it was clean, and if like us you only intend to shower in it and use the loo, it’s fine. It’s nowhere near big enough to hold a full on rave in, although I reckon you could possibly manage an Irish jig? The staff were helpful and pleasant, and this hotel served as a decent enough place to sleep after slightly more glasses of wine than needed. We would stay here again!
