Great location 2km radius from tourist attractions. Rooms are clean. Gabriella at front desk was helpful in suggesting transport and food options. Could have given a hot water kettle. We asked and then the gave kettle in the room.

My wife and two daughters visited Madrid on July this year and we weren't disappointed with the nice facilities of this great little hotel! The best thing about it is the fantastic central location. Everything that matters is within walking distance and right bang in the middle of some classy restaurants and various shopping...what a street indeed! Madrid is a wonderful city and a visit to this hotel will not let you down with very competitive prices compared to the main big hotel chains. Our hostess is lovely...couldn't do enough for you! If you don't need a lot of frills and services -- or particularly spacious rooms, Hostal Abril is a great option. I booked through a website and got a decent room rate for a 6-night stay for a single room. A couple of days before my stay, the hotel e-mailed me a welcome note with a link to some useful information. The closest Metro station is Chueca with Gran Via (currently closed for renovation) not far too. The hostal is located on Calle Fuencarral, Madrid's trendiest shopping street. It is pedestrianized where the hostal is and, since the street is full of stores and boutiques rather than bars and clubs, it quiets down after about 10 pm in contrast to other streets in Madrid's center. In any event, I was assigned to room 49, at the back of the building, so it was quiet anyway. The room was next to the hostal's laundry, so I would not recommend it if you like to sleep in very late. They only clean the rooms until 1 pm, so that would be another reason not to sleep in too much. The walls are pretty thin, so sometimes I could hear the neighbors in the next room -- which might actually have been part of the other hostal sharing the 4th floor. Hostal Abril seems to be jointly run with Fuencarral Rooms. Hostal Abril is on the 4th floor, and Rooms Fuencarral on the 3rd. After 7 pm, front desk services supposedly are available on the 4th floor only. At check-in, you are given one key card that works on the main ground floor exterior door, the 4th floor door to the hostal, and to your room, so you can come and go as you please without stopping by reception. My single room was extremely compact, with barely enough room to contain the single bed and the ensuite bathroom. One small complaint I had was that there wasn't even a chair in the room, so you basically had to sit on the bed if you wanted to sit. There was no wardrobe/closet, but a small built-in open cubicle of sorts with some hangers on a pole. The shower was very compact too, and was only closed on three sides without a shower door or shower curtain, so you would almost be guaranteed to get water on the bathroom floor after a shower (this seems to be trendy or something). The shower did have a rain forest shower head and plenty of hot water, so that was comforting. It also had a built in hairdryer (I did not try it to see if it worked). The decor of the room and the hostal overall reminded me a litle of the Ibis Budget Hotels if you want a point of reference. When I am in Madrid, I usually am only in my hotel room to sleep, clean up, and get online. The bed was a twin bed but comfortable enough. The wifi was reliable and fast. A nice extra I appreciated was that the Hostal Abril provides (on request) electric hot water kettles and packets of Nescafe and tea bags. That is a rarity for lodgings at this price point. I would definitely stay there again.
