I was mostly happy with my stay at the Eco Tree Hotel despite the fact that it is now beginning to suffer from wear and tear; (stained fabrics, fraying towels, worn/patched carpets, worn/badly repaired furnishings). Nothing terrible but disappointing nonetheless. They had no cable channels only 4 local TV programmes. The shower pressure was good and the water temperature fine. The pool was clean and there were a few loungers, but clients were told to use one of the room towels as pool towels were no longer provided. A clean towel could be requested. WiFi was average and suffered some dropouts and buffering. Reception said it could be very poor when the hotel had many guests (Worst I experienced was 10meg down & 3 upload). The location was about a 20min walk from the 'attractions' like Jonker Walk etc. and there were plenty or places to eat and drink close by (Nyonya Atlantic restaurant across the street is very good). Plenty of choice for Asian breakfasts but cereals, toast and jam for the European palate. The restaurant staff were very pleasant and did your fried eggs to order....a fresh toasted egg sandwich to start the day! At check-in I was asked to pay tourist tax (Heritage tax shown on Agoda booking) but later discovered they had also added the State Tax of 60MYR. I asked for this to be refunded to my CC but was told the payment had already been 'audited' and would be refunded 'within 15 days'. As refunds to credit cards are usually done on the payment device I found this strange. Furthermore only the credit card payment slip was available but no itemised bill. A hotel dealing with bookings from Agoda and similar agencies should know that these taxes are usually included online. I have to wonder if this is common practice at Eco Tree and whether others clients have also been double charged the state tax, especially as I was later told that I should have informed them the tax was paid in my reservation!! Altogether an adequate hotel that I would recommend at the right price.  Incidentally in the days before I checked out they had started stripping the wallpaper in the entrance foyer and  painting....So maybe improvements are on the way?
