My wife Penny and I travelled from Winnipeg, Canada, and spent three incredible weeks in Malaysia from the end of February into March. We have been fortunate to stay at beautiful resorts in different parts of the world, but our time at Ambong in Langkawi will always stand out as one of the most heartfelt and memorable travel experiences we have ever had. We began our stay at Ambong Rainforest Retreat, where we spent three nights surrounded by the lush rainforest. The setting was absolutely beautiful — peaceful, natural, and tucked into the landscape in a way that felt authentic rather than overly manufactured. The accommodations had a modern rustic feel, which is exactly what you would expect and hope for in a rainforest environment. It was comfortable, unique, and full of character. And then there were the monkeys. They were everywhere — curious, mischievous, entertaining, and very much part of the experience. You truly feel like you are sharing the space with nature, which made our stay even more special. After our rainforest stay, we moved down to Ambong Pool Villas, and that took the experience to another level. It went from modern rustic to modern luxury, with stunning views, beautiful villas, incredible wildlife, and some of the most gracious hospitality we have ever experienced. The villas were private, peaceful, and beautifully designed, but what made the stay unforgettable was the people. Prim, Mr. Lee, the General Manager, and the entire Ambong team treated us like family. Not in a scripted, resort-training kind of way — but in a genuine, human way. They remembered us, looked after us, anticipated what we needed, and made us feel cared for every single day. After four nights in the Pool Villas, we moved on to another resort that had been presented to us as one of the most ultra-luxury resorts on the island. Without getting into unnecessary detail, we were less than impressed. It may have been more polished in certain ways, but it did not have the warmth, soul, or hospitality we had experienced at Ambong. After two nights, we contacted Ambong and asked if we could “come home.” Thankfully, they had availability, and we returned to the Pool Villas for the remainder of our stay — approximately another seven nights. When we arrived back, we were greeted like long-lost family. That moment alone says everything about this resort. The staff were gracious, kind, and went above and beyond for us in every possible way. Prim was amazing. The General Manager was incredibly gracious and such a genuinely kind person. Mr. Lee and the entire team made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. The service was not just professional — it was deeply personal. Ambong may not be the most polished or ultra-glossy resort on the island, but in our experience, the level of customer service surpassed anything else we experienced in Langkawi. Resorts are resorts. Food is food. Ocean is ocean. Beautiful views can be found in many places. But what separates Ambong is the people. No one wants to walk up and down hills all day in the scorching heat, yet the Ambong team does it with a genuine smile and a level of hospitality that is very hard to teach. They work incredibly hard, and they do it with grace. Anyone who overlooks that should take a moment to appreciate what these staff members do every day to make guests feel cared for. We experienced as much of the island and resort as we could, including the spa, which was wonderful. I believe we each had around six treatments over the course of our stay — massages, wraps, facials, and more. Every treatment added to the feeling of relaxation and escape that made this trip so special. The only note I would add is that Ambong is not necessarily for everyone. If you are looking for a busy, high-energy resort with constant activity, or if you do not do well being secluded with your spouse or travel partner, this may not be the right fit. But if you are looking for breathtaking surroundings, world-class hospitality, a connection to nature, and a rustic-luxury experience with heart, Ambong is truly something special. The service was warm, genuine and outstanding in every way. Our villa was absolutely superb — beautifully designed, luxurious, peaceful and the perfect place to relax and unwind. Every detail was thoughtfully done and it felt like a private paradise. We honestly only had one complaint… our stay went far too quickly! We would have loved to stay much longer.
