The property is beautiful and the hard product accommodations are what one would expect for the area and the price, yet the level of service leaves a bit to be desired particularly when dining. Considering that it is kind of remote it was a bit disappointing that they charge for bottled water at the included breakfast. Additionally, it required several requests at the restaurant to receive the requested items. Some staff appeared to acknowledge requests and never bothers to follow upon them. I want to like and love this hotel not least of which because I am building a house slightly south of Punto Pescadero, but the management could certainly improve on training their staff on hospitality best practices.

We took our family to Los Barriles for March break (seven days) and stayed at PPP. We stumbled onto this resort looking for a group lunch two years ago and wanted to return as you can paddleboard, kayak and snorkel off the beach in front of the facility. The property's strength is that it is right on the ocean and has spectacular beach, views, snorkeling and sunrises. We woke up early (615am) for the views and sun and swam with many reef fish right at the beach down the stairs (100 meters). Clownfish, trumpetfish, pufferfish and more in the hotel bay. We watched (from the hotel restaurant) so many whales breach and swim with their young down towards the protected marine sanctuary Cabo Pulmo (CP). If you have not visited CP you should it's another part of the Sea of Cortez which is active with incredible sea life. We hired a local fisherman to take us out to catch Tuna - Dorado and Bonito. We caught fish and took them to local restaurants who cooked them for us on the spot. At PPP the breakfast was included in our rate, they call it "the Continental" you receive fresh fruit, toast /granola and yogurt and as much coffee as you like, they also have a full breakfast menu with a good omelette and kids pancakes. That said we ate 90% of meals out in El Cardinal about 15 minutes away from the hotel, the food in that area was excellent head to LA DONA - this place should have a Michelin star the food quality is so high. We also hit the local pizza place and Hornillas restaurant as highlights. That said the hotel has a good nachos if you need a quick meal. The beds were fine and the rooms have space for two adults. There is also a pull out lounger that would be fine for a small child to sleep comfortably. The hotel also has two pools, one is an infinity pool our kids enjoyed high on a cliff ** If you like Pickleball take the mountain highway back to Las Barillas and play at Tres Palapas, awesome spot with drop in games and margaritas. Car Rental: We booked our vehicle with a local company CACTUS rental car at SJD airport and I will only use them in the future as they are quick and honest and include the required Mexican insurance. I used Enterprise Rental Car on the last trip - do not use them in Mexico. Some potential opportunities for improvement: The locals are correct to have the expression "bad roads - good people". The roads have legitimate bumps (topes) and you have to be prepared for that experience with a truck or SUV that has high clearance to manage the drives. Watch out for the cows and goats on the roads - try to drive mostly during the day. While the roads can be a challenge they do create some privacy and invite active travelers. You could also just get a hotel transfer and rent a UTV like a Polaris RZR for the week, they are really fun to drive and can manage the highways and sand dunes. *The hotel owns a runway for private planes /helicopters (now closed). The airstrip may re-open in time and that would really help this area. The hotel itself is slightly worn down but for many this may add to the charm of the place. I do believe the hotel could really use some investment to upgrade the sewage/sanitation, it would be a great investment. *kind staff but could improve on training and communication. There was no one on staff that spoke English but google translate worked and the hotel has some internet that worked best at the pools or restaurant. Overall 3.5 of 5 rating. I would go back as I really enjoy the area and many parts of the hotel.

“Beautiful view and pool...but.”

Spent 2 nights here with 2 other couples. This was our 4th time. View, new infinity pool and beach furniture were amazing...but new staff is struggling! Spent 2 nights here with 2 other couples. This was our 4th time. View, new infinity pool and beach furniture were amazing...but new staff is struggling! No english seemed to be understood even with my usual amount of spanish could not understand normal needs. Restaurant could not get orders correct even when pointing at item on menu. Ordered a Mai Tai and received a long island made with coke. Then were charged for both which after long discussion and lots of their time spent on Google translate charges were reversed. Menu items took a very long time to come. Smoke detector battery in restaurant was dying so it churped every 36 seconds..which really interrupted a relaxing meal. We told them about it, but continued on for two days. We decided to go off property the second night for this reason and a large party that was planned for the night. The pizza place in El Cardenal was amazing!! Our room was excellent #5, but our friends had #2, which has an amazing view, but reeked of sewer! The cleaners came the second day and tried to fix with perfume, but it only made the problem worse. When our friends went to remove their sheets at check out they found the mattress in terrible shape. Basically disintegrating. They asked for the water at the front desk to be refilled, that never happened. They were offered free nights to come again, but they will not. It seems they are remodeling rooms but have not made it to the north side of the property maybe? Things were better at the restaurant our previous stays but did get bitten all night by mosquitoes in our room on one occasion room #7. Brought bug spray this time, but did not have that problem. Although it looks like others have on their review. Might be helpful for staff at the restaurant to have numbered items on the menu so there would be less mixups? The view, beach and pool will keep us coming back, but we bring a big cooler with food and drinks, bug spray and check the room for good mattress, mosquito hatch and sewer smell. I understand its Mexico but some things make for a very unrelaxing stay.
