Hotel Templo Mayor

“Really noisy!”

This is a 3-star hotel in downtown Mexico City. These are the pros and cons: Pros: Nice staff. Clean. Cons: You will not be able to sleep. There are many street vendors around and the rooms face a courtyard. You can hear everything!

Pros: 1. Very affordable 2. Few minutes walk from Tempo Mayor and Zocalo 3. Staff is wonderful 4. Clean Cons: 1. Very very basic. No amenities at all - no bathmat, washcloths or handtowels. No bedside lamp. 2. My bathroom was kind of gross. It had a bad smell coming from the drain in the floor (I think that's where it was coming from!), and the tiles were chipped, plus I believe I saw mold between some of them. 2. No restaurants, cafes or bars nearby. You have to walk beyond the Zocalo to get any type of meal. 3. Very noisy inside and out. Because of the tile floors and design around a central atrium, you can hear every door open and close, every footstep, every suitcase being wheeled down the hallway. Also every day there is a local market in the area, selling things like socks, clothing, home goods etc (not touristy stuff). Many of the vendors play loud music as well. If you know the L.A. area, think Santee Alley. All in all if you want to be in the Centro Historico for cheap it's decent. But I learned my lesson....you get what you pay for!

Lets start with the best thing about this hotel: location. Is only a couple of blocks away from Zocalo and the metro so for the price that is asked, the location is really fabulous. We booked direct through the hotel website and when we arrived they could not locate our reservation, what is not ideal when you just traveled for more than 12 hours. After a few phone calls (and zero English skills) the receptionist managed to find the reservation. I guess they need a better reservation system! We first stayed 4 nights in a double room with a window and then we came back later in the week for a few hours (long flight connection ) and stayed in a room with no window, very claustrophobic. The double rooms are very very small but I guess that’s fine when you spend most of the day outside exploring. There was one particular very noisy night,but not noise from outside, it was noise from the lobby area. The bathrooms are very decent with nice decoration. The towel quality is very poor thought. In conclusion, if you’re an explorer on a budget and you’re looking for a location/price match, this is your place. If you’re looking for a bit more of luxury and space, look somewhere else. Ah, they also have a lovely rooftop area but with the most uncomfortable seats and chairs. There’s lots of potential in this hotel, hopefully they can improve these little issues soon.
