Forget Aspen, Palm Springs, & Cabo. If you want to get away & not worry about anything, The Cantil is the place. 1 hour drive from Xalapa or 2 hours from Veracruz, you are in the hills of Alto Lucero, with stunning views of the Mountains in all directions. On a clear day, you can almost see water, even though your 60 miles away. The property is well-maintained, elegant, & has all the features one needs to vegetate & have fun. Suites are clean & well decorated. The "Veracruz" Suite is perfect for 2 Couples to enjoy a week or more with beautiful views. In fact, almost every room has a balcony overlooking little towns and farms. The staff is more than helpful. I ran into a flat tire situation upon my arrival, by the next morning, the tire was fixed and charges billed to room, at reasonable mexican pesos without hassle or fear of being taken advantage. The Restaurant is outstanding, service is exceptional. Whether we dined on the open patio, sat at the Pool, or in the private table overlooking the area, a staff member was there to address our needs. The Pool and Jacuzzi outside are great, plenty of seating and sun. Pottery making on the premises for some therapy, Parasailing is a must. But the kicker is the Spa. With a large Clay Sweat Room, various massage rooms on cantilevered decks to experience the beauty of the area. Once you are at the hotel, it is not necessary to leave, although we did drive to Xalapa and Coatepec for a Coffee Tour and experience the Mecca of Coffee making in Mexico. Xalapa is a great town with awesome shopping, exceptional restaurants and nightlife(although I wouldn't suggest driving back to hotel late at night, since the road back is not lighted and treacherous if not perfectly sober) If you don't rent a car, I suggest getting a private car to take you to hotel and then pick you up. If you rent, you can experience the various food vendors along the road with fresh elotes & tacos. People throughout the area are very friendly (it helps to speak the language a bit) tons of Sugar Cane & Chayote farms. Careful driving, roads are little beat up & potholes and topes will slow you down, but the scenery is spectacular. We can't wait to go back and spend another week here.
