“Really nice, but don’t go here with unrealistic expectations”

We booked Sotuta de Peon somewhat last minute when Hacienda Santa Rosa abruptly closed for repairs/renovation. Sotuta is distinctive for being an actual working farm: they have henequen fields and small quantities of livestock. They are making henequen products on-site. The hotel is built on the la… more

We really enjoyed this place. It's beautiful and serene and gave us a glimpse into life in the "outback". The property and staff are welcoming and the animals wandering around are so charming. The tour is terrific. I loved the small gift shop....which was full of treasures made on site. The only do… more

“Nice surroundings, rooms and pool. Breakfast was boring.”

We stayed for 2 nights and had a good time. It was very quiet and I think there were not a lot of guests in the hotel. This might have been the reason that the breakfast was boring (fruits and eggs). The dinner however was really good. The hacienda is good for families because they have a lot of di… more

  • Yes, guests at Hacienda Viva Sotuta De Peón have highlighted that: We booked Sotuta de Peon somewhat last minute when Hacienda Santa Rosa abruptly closed for repairs/renovation. Sotuta is distinctive for being an actual working farm: they have henequen fields and small quantities of livestock. They are making henequen products on-site. The hotel is built on the land of an old hacienda, which you can also walk around. You can walk the paths around the fields. You will see and hear the sheep, mules, horses, and burros. This is a rural location: there are bugs. Dirt is present—it’s a farm. Lots of birds to see and hear. The pool is large and quite nice. It’s a beautiful place. The rooms are in fake palapas. Skip the “superior” rooms that cost extra and come with a plunge pool (that you almost assuredly won’t use—the main pool is nearby and superior). The beds are fine and the rooms are nicely appointed. I enjoyed the hammocks. There is WiFi, but it’s not amazing. A good opportunity to unplug. We found service to be quite good. I can confirm what other reviewers have mentioned: this hotel has communication problems, particularly around food, and they’re making it harder than it needs to be. There is a restaurant behind in the main house of the old hacienda that is open during the day, providing breakfast and lunch, serving pleasant, straightforward regional (Mexican) food. There is another restaurant by the pool that offers dinner: most of the time you need to make a reservation to eat there, and there is very little choice in the dinner menu: they have prepared what they have prepared based on the reservations they receive. The dinner food is ambitious, relative to other rural hotels in this bracket, and it is quite good. They do not limited themselves to Yucatecan food, either. Make the reservation and enjoy it. They generally can accommodate dietary restrictions if they know about them in advance. This same operation also does hacienda tours for day-trippers. These tours are surprisingly long and expensive, and we opted out. (Based on other reviews, they must be pretty good tours.) Because we were staying at the hotel and had wrist bands, we could walk around pretty much wherever we wanted, including seeing the henequen mill. Some folks come here to ride horses, too.
