My wife and I spent two wonderful weeks at Mérida’s Hotel Casa San Ángel in February 2025. The profuse and carefully -tended vegetation in the atrium made it hard to remember we were in the center of a city of a million people. Cozy rockers in the hallway surrounding the patio invited daydreaming, reading, and enjoying the play of light on the plants. Our bed was comfortable. The AC and fan worked flawlessly. Water pressure in the shower was strong. A good restaurant, Tala, is attached to the hotel, and a continental breakfast—with excellent coffee, freshly-baked bread, and fruit—was included in the room rate. We gladly paid extra for supplementary dishes, such as Tala’s award-winning huevos motuleños, tricolor enchiladas, and crepes. Upon returning from breakfast, we always found our bed made and fresh towels hung. ¡Grácias, Cristina y María! The bilingual receptionists took our laundry each morning and returned it, air-dried, that afternoon. They graciously complied with unusual requests, e.g. finding a yoga mat to lend. They ordered taxis that showed up within a few minutes, and that charged no more than those I hailed on the street. They arranged two low-cost and wonderful cenotes tours—one of them at the last minute. All of the staff were warm and friendly. We loved Mérida, and our stay at this hotel was the best part of it.

The staff of the hotel, restaurant and gift shop are very friendly and most helpful, not only with directions but also with Spanish lessons. 👏. The hotel is clean and comfortable. A great find and it comes highly recommended 👍👍

Casa San Angel We stayed here recently during a visit with my son (33) who is living in Merida for 9 months as he pursues his doctorate. My daughter (46) came in from New Mexico to join us. Due to a scheduling error on my part, my partner and I arrived the day before our reservation actually started. The folks here were very accommodating and had a room available for us that night, which became the start of a 6 night stay. It’s a very cool space…with an open-to-the-sky courtyard / “lobby” area in the center. The rooms are up one level, with a very nice, warmly furnished veranda outside of the rooms, overlooking the central courtyard / “lobby”. The rooms we stayed in were huge, airy and very comfy and clean. Nice little hotel restaurant just off the lobby / courtyard….great rolls and coffee in the morning, with other dining options throughout the day. Secure parking was available about a block away, and was included in our booking. The hotel was centrally located, within walking distance of lots of shops, restaurants, clubs and the Plaza Grande. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay, with a couple exceptions: The hotel is located next to a bar / restaurant that has both live music and an “aggressive” house sound system, and they are LOUD. This mostly affects rooms 108 (our room), 109 and 110, as they are the closest to the bar / restaurant. The music continued into the night…Thursday night up until 10 or so, well past one on a Friday night, and until 2 am on Saturday night. Closing the windows, turning on the AC and putting in earplugs knocked out about 90% of the sound. Our only other issue involved their “no outside visitors” house rule. I invited my adult children to join us for a drink in our room on Thursday evening before we went to an outdoor music event at a nearby park….they arrived at 8:45pm. The front desk person refused to allow them to come upstairs to our room….if we wanted to visit with them, we had to come downstairs to the courtyard / “lobby” area. House rules, no discussion. I told her that they were my children. After a short terse conversation, we brought everyone’s drinks downstairs to the courtyard / “lobby”, chatted awkwardly for a bit with my kids and went off to our event. The next morning I reviewed their house rules (see photo)…and sure enough, #8 is pretty clear about no outside guests. #9 says visiting family must check in and show ID. OK. We could have (and certainly would have) done that…. if the front desk person would have asked for ID, or had presented that as an option…especially after I had told her that they were my children. We discussed our experience with the front desk as we were checking out. We got a kinder, gentler version of “rules are rules, no discussion”. When we pressed them on the whole “visiting family must show ID” portion, we were told that “it was for our safety” and that they may want to consider looking deeper at those rules…..the reasoning / explanation seemed….murky. So, there you are. As long as you’re OK with the “no visitors” deal, and you’re aware of the noisy neighbors on that one side, it really is a very cool place!
