“Wonderful Coimbra hotel!”

Beautiful historic property in the wonderful city of Coimbra! Our spacious rooms in the historic building had lovely private gardens. Breakfast buffet was plentiful. The reception staff are especially accommodating and helpful. Don’t miss seeing the gardens at the back of the property.

We were only at this hotel for 1 night. We were in a luxurious one bedroom suite with a very large bedroom, sitting room, and bathroom. We were only at this hotel for 1 night. We were in a luxurious one bedroom suite with a very large bedroom, sitting room, and bathroom. Well-appointed and quite fancy, the creature comforts were nonetheless not very practical. The bathroom, in particular, had issues. The shower had overly strong water pressure, leading to leaking from the stall shower into the main part of the bathroom. In addition, the staff were not terribly friendly or approachable and when I told someone at the front desk about other issues in the bathroom they looked at me blankly. On the contrary, the servers at breakfast were all friendly and helpful. It’s hard to complain about such an extravagant and large setting but the place just left us cold.

The hotel was very pretty inside but the outside was a bit run down, especially the gardens. We had the Spa room which was very spacious and had a big terrace with view to the garden. The most annoying thing in the room was the position of the sockets next to the bed, they were under the bedside tables, I had to kneel down to plug in and unplug the chargers. The second thing was the old styled hangers that hooked on the little metal hooks which really annoyed my husband. I suppose people still steal wood hangers! They were a bit mean with the supply of coffee/tea & milk, the tea/coffee packets were very basic brands! The sauna & steam rooms were very basic and the showers didn't work well, one of them was broken. I don't think they should call themselves ¨One of The most luxurious hotels¨!¨We had a drink in the bar and the house wine was off. The waiter didn't know how long it had been opened. Overall it was a pleasant stay, it was nice to see the grounds and gardens which really needed some more loving care. Perhaps it would be different in May/June. The location is a bit out of the city centre but it's not a problem as Uber is very cheap and easy.

I decided I needed to redo the review. Although my room was probably only 2-2.5 stars, the common areas od the hotel are 5 stars, as is the staff, who could not be more considerate. All in, therefore, I feel four stars is probably more fair than three. I recommend you take advantage of the common areas and grounds * So, the hotel property and common rooms are amazing. The hotel is well situated and central with beautiful sitting rooms and the staff could not be nicer. But my actual room (a spa room) is at odds with the charm of the hotel. It sits in a different building that I think may be a reconverted dorm or office. It does overlook a park (and parking lot) and during the day, the view does a lot to improve the room. But the room itself is somewhat airless and disappointing- like sleeping in a decorated warehouse. I do think they are trying the best they can with that space. The issue is that they are using that space at all for hotel rooms, given that these rooms were likely never intended to be used for sleeping and that they sit in a modern building completely at odds with the hotel advertised. It’s hard to know if this is a 2 or 4/5 but I think combing all favors, it’s 3. There is a sparsely populated gym that faces a concrete wall. There is also a pool. The pool is heated and requires swim class Breakfast is included.
