Having read the reviews about the hotel being in urgent need of refurbishment, we visited with trepidation. However, we were very pleasantly surprised - the hotel is old, but that is part of the charm of staying here. Nothing is in dire need of decoration, nothing gave me the impression of a hotel that wasn't cared for, and I liked staying in a grand old heritage hotel which offered a step back in time, blending historic charm with modern luxury. The staff were superb, especially in the Grand restaurant for breakfast and dinner. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and their attention to detail was second to none. There was an excellent choice of food at breakfast (although I agree with previous comments about numerous flies amongst the food), and a welcome glass of bubbly every morning. We had five evening meals in the restaurant, and the choice of food was really good. Every day was different, and it was obvious that the quality of ingredients served was very high. As a negative point, the prices for the very limited wine list were exorbitant (the house wine was 55 Euros a bottle), and we didn't see many people drinking more than a glass. Most people left the hotel after their meal and visited one of the many establishments a very short distance walk from the hotel, for wine and alcohol prices a fraction of what the hotel charges. I understand that 5 star hotels charge top dollar for alcohol, but this was a step too far. We would have consumed a bottle every evening, but decided not to pay what they charge for a bottle that can be bought in the local supermarket for a fifth of the price. We used the 'private beach' area of the hotel every day, and I'd recommend this. The staff, however, have no interaction with guests, and spend a lot of their time talking amongst themselves, rather than assisting guests. Despite a few negative points which I'll class as constructive criticism, I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. We had an extremely enjoyable stay.

My husband and I stayed here for 7 nights with our grown up children and their spouses. From the moment we arrived we were impressed with the excellent service given by the staff and that continued through the week. We had a lake view room and the extra cost was well worth it - definitely a wow moment when we walked into the room. The hotel is one of the only ones in Bled that has lake frontage/access and we took advantage of that every day. Towels and sun beds were provided free of charge and we swam daily in the lake which was warmer than the sea in England! We also took advantage of the row boats and were able to visit the island using them. We had breakfast at the hotel where there was a good choice of hot and cold food. Mostly buffet but there were also à la carte choices included. The hotel itself was definitely grand in its day and still exudes that feeling although I believe it is due for an upgrade which is probably needed in places. Overall a fabulous holiday and if we ever return to Bled this would definitely be where we’d want to stay.

Grand Hotel Toplice is all about one thing: its incredible location on the shores of Lake Bled. If you’re staying here, my advice is – book a lake-facing room. Waking up each morning to the view of the lake, the island and the mountains beyond was one of the highlights of our holiday. The hotel’s private decking area is another real asset. Having sunbeds overlooking the lake, with direct access for swimming, was fantastic. We spent several hours relaxing there and swimming in the beautifully clear water. It felt like a real privilege compared with the busier public areas around the lake. The hotel itself has a traditional, grand feel. Yes, parts of the décor are a little dated, but (if you’re feeling generous) you can treat this as adding to its old-world charm rather than detracting from the experience. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay, and breakfast offered an excellent buffet with plenty of choice to set us up for the day. Lake Bled itself is absolutely beautiful. We loved walking around the lake, and for anyone who prefers a more relaxed option, the land train is a great way to explore. We also visited Vintgar Gorge, which was spectacular (be prepared for plenty of walking), and had great fun on the Straža summer toboggan. Overall, if you’re looking for a hotel in a truly stunning setting, Grand Hotel Toplice is hard to beat. We’d happily return.
