I've stayed at quite a few hotels around South Africa over the years, but if you ask me to choose one brand that has consistently felt like home, it's The Capital. Whether it's Johannesburg or Mbombela, I never really have to think twice about where I'm booking. Mbombela, however, is where the story gets personal. Over the past four years, The Capital Mbombela has become my home away from home. I've spent three Christmases there on my own, a few holidays, countless work trips, and enough weekends that the staff stopped treating me like a room number and started treating me like... well... me. They'd always greet me warmly and, with perfect timing, remind me that it was about time I stopped arriving by myself. Last weekend I finally had the pleasure of introducing my wife to the place I'd been talking about for years. Like all good stories, ours started with a little bit of drama. We booked a spontaneous weekend away, arrived on Saturday afternoon, and were told the hotel was completely full because of a modelling event. We parked near the outdoor sports screening area, watched a bit of rugby, sat in the car for about an hour pretending we were "thinking about our options" when in reality we were quietly mourning the weekend we had planned. Eventually we accepted defeat and decided to find somewhere else for the night. Then, just as we were leaving, fate put on a Capital name badge. A gentleman at reception named Sbu noticed us driving away and asked why we were leaving. After hearing our story, he smiled and told us that a guest had just cancelled. Within minutes, he had secured the room for us, found us parking near the charging point, and completely rescued our weekend. Sbu didn't just find us a room—he protected a memory. For years, I'd been telling my wife, "You have to experience this place one day." Imagine how awkward it would've been if her first experience ended in the parking lot! Thanks to Sbu, she finally understood why I speak so fondly about The Capital Mbombela and why I remain so loyal to The Capital brand. The room was comfortable, the atmosphere was welcoming as always, and the staff reminded me exactly why I keep coming back. Now... can we have a quick chat about breakfast? Whoever designed that breakfast buffet clearly doesn't understand the struggle of people whose eyes have Premier League ambitions while their stomachs are still playing Sunday League football. Every morning I confidently build a plate fit for royalty, only for my stomach to announce, after six bites, that today's meeting has been adjourned. So here's my only suggestion for the future: please consider introducing a "Breakfast Leftovers Amnesty Programme." I solemnly swear I'm not trying to smuggle muffins out of the restaurant or start a black-market croissant syndicate. I simply want to finish the breakfast I enthusiastically committed to once my stomach has had a chance to catch up with my optimism. To Sbu—thank you. To the entire team at The Capital Mbombela—thank you for continuing to make a loyal guest feel like family. And to The Capital as a brand, thank you for setting a standard that keeps me coming back, whether I'm checking in at Johannesburg or returning to my second home in Mbombela.
