Planning our trip to South Africa, we knew we wanted to go to a reserve and participate on safari rides. Kuganha did not disappoint! Upon our arrival at Inverdoorn, we were greeted with champagne and water as we waited for our guide to arrive at the lodge. Our guide for the two nights we were staying at Kuganha was Berger and what a fantastic host he was! We were excited to get settled into our tent and the journey to the tented camp gave us a sneak preview of the reserve and what was to come on future safari rides. After getting settled in our tent, our chef for our stay - Monique, introduced herself and asked about our meal preferences for lunch. The meals that she prepared for us throughout our stay were exquisite! We never left a meal hungry and as a pickier eater - I thoroughly enjoyed everything that she prepared for us. Each meal she would ask us for our preferences and provide a couple of options. At multiple meals she even created some local dishes and desserts that we had never had before. Serving as our guide, Berger took us on multiple safari rides and was a wealth of knowledge! He shared so much information on the animals that we were seeing and answered any and all of the questions that we had throughout the ride. He did a great job at identifying where the animals would be on the property and at the start of each ride, he would ask us what we would like to see and worked to do his best to locate those animals. He made our experience thoroughly enjoyable and was always available to help book massages or address other requests. Lastly, we just wanted to say a big thank you to Esme, who helped keep the tent clean. She would stop by to provide fresh linens and clear dishes after each of our meals. She was so friendly and also willing to bring us anything we needed.

We had a wonderful 3-night stay at Kuganha. Great service from "Chef" and Patricia at the tent camp, but especially interesting and enjoyable game drives with our ranger, Cherine. Cherine is young but very knowledgeable and passionate about the animals. The tents were quite luxurious but still had a "safari-feeling." The game reserve is not a true wild safari. It's a 100 square kilometre fenced in area. The animals are fed at particular locations. For that reason, the rangers generally know where to find the animals. We saw all big 5s (plus several more) every day. The lions are in their own separate enclosed reserve so that they don't attack the other animals. We couldn't spot the lions immediately, but after 10 minutes of driving around, we always found them. So it's not exactly a zoo, but it's also not the "wilderness." However, if you want to be sure to see all the big fives without driving around for days and days, then a private reserve is the way to go. Although 3 nights is a luxury, I would recommend staying only 2. Otherwise there is a fair amount of repetition. The food is excellent and the setting (private dining areas in front of the tents) absolutely romantic. Elephants often come to the tent area around breakfast time and drink from the swimming pool! Have your camera ready!
