As someone who has written hundreds of reviews and traveled extensively, I take feedback seriously. Overall Impression: A Five-Star Experience Although there were a few minor opportunities for improvement during my short stay, the overall experience was excellent—easily five stars. The Room Even though I booked the smallest and most affordable room, it exceeded expectations. The bed was massive—the largest “double” bed I’ve ever slept in, closer to a super king in U.S. terms. It was incredibly comfortable, with soft sheets, a fresh scent, and excellent pillows. The AC was powerful, which I appreciated after a long, hot, and humid day of hiking. Wi-Fi was fast and easy to connect to, with no drops in bandwidth. The in-room onsen-style bathtub was a highlight. It easily fits two adults and offers a scenic mountain view. It does take a while to fill, but it’s worth the wait. The walk-in shower was spacious, though the fixed-angle showerhead could be improved by making it adjustable. Breakfast Experience Breakfast was delicious but a bit confusing due to the language barrier. It appears to be a buffet at first glance, but you are also given a menu to choose a set meal. The buffet serves as a supplement to your main dish. There were five or six set options, including a Japanese breakfast, a vegetarian set, and the spicy laksa, which I ordered and thoroughly enjoyed. A note for travelers: Taiwan generally does not offer low-calorie sweeteners like Splenda or Stevia. Only sugar and brown sugar were available. The Communal Bath The second-floor Japanese-style onsen is a traditional nude bath, fully segregated by gender. There are three mineral pools: 38.5°C (101°F), 42°C (107.6°F), and a cool bath at 28°C (82°F). There are no jets—just calm, relaxing spring water. As is custom, you must shower before entering, even if you’ve already showered in your room. The hotel provides traditional Yukata robes. Be sure to fold the left side over the right—reversing this is reserved for funerals. No one explained these cultural details, and I only learned about the nudity expectation from another tourist. While it was an interesting experience, I personally preferred the privacy of the in-room onsen. The train station is a 5-minute walk away. There are a ton of restaurants in the area, including Japanese restaurants. Opportunities for Improvement The hotel did not inform us that the minibar drinks were complimentary. I assumed they weren’t free and only learned otherwise at checkout. The minibar included eight drinks, including two beers—completely free. The “beverage credit” offered via Hotels.com turned out to be a discount on a single bottle of wine, not a flexible beverage credit. English is not widely spoken, so I recommend using a translator app like Google Translate to ease communication. Final Thoughts Despite a few minor miscommunications, my stay at Yamagata Kaku was memorable and relaxing. From the luxurious bed to the mountain-view onsen bath, it delivered on comfort and experience. I would absolutely recommend it—especially to couples or solo travelers looking for a scenic, soothing getaway in Jiaoxi.
