“Condo-like Stay In An Excellent Location”

I chose Shama Lakeview for this year’s stay in Bangkok because a) it was close to Benjakitti Park, my morning run spot. and b) I wanted a more rental condo experience rather than a regular hotel. I take it that Shama Lakeview was originally conceived as a residential condo building but converted to a dual use condo/hotel at some point. My room was a "King Studio Lake View" on mid-level tower B. It was certainly more spacious than a standard hotel room in the area. Based on my research I had made an advance request for a room on a high level of tower A with a good view of the lake at Benjakitti. That’s not what I got. My room (in B) had a view of the pool and a small partial view of the far end of the lake. On my first night the AC in my room did not work. In the morning I complained about both the AC and the lousy view. Management was quite responsive about fixing the AC. Later in the day they also indicated they’d move me to a better room. (I opted to pass because I’d already unpacked and didn’t want the hassle of a move.) The location of the hotel is very good. There is an (all-important) 7-11 across from the Shama on the other side of Soi 16. Also across the soi is Mary’s laundry service. Across the soi and about 3 minutes away is a Foodland Supermarket (with the good value Took Lae Dee restaurant/lunch counter. Pharmacy in there too.) Numerous coffee shops and small restaurants are along Soi 16 as well. Shama has a fixed route tuk-tuk service that runs regularly. The tuk-tuk will drop you off at the 7-11 at the mouth of Soi 16 where it branches off from Ratchadaphisek Road. From here it is 2-3 minute walk to the BTS Skytrain, the Terminal 21 Mall or the MRT subway. (Tip: shortcut through the Exchange Tower building, take the escalator up one floor to exit the building onto the walkway to the BTS, etc.) Coming back to the Shama via tuk-tuk is just based on your timing luck. Most likely you’ll have to hoof it back (about 10 minutes….on challenging sidewalks). Hotel staff were excellent. The fitness facility was also very good. Tip: if you need a convenience store, skip the ground floor Lawson’s for the superior 7-11 across the soi. Much better selection of everything there. Tip: if you want to go over to Benjakitti Park from the Shama, cut through the driveway just past the Foodland. Shaves about 3 minutes of what would otherwise be a 13 minute walk.
