Booked a room for one night before getting ferry. Interesting building with some lovely public rooms, but layout is quite strange. For example, the 2 bars are in small rooms with no windows, and the restaurant has no character, but there are other lovely rooms with characterful features that aren’t well used eg drawing room, morning room and the room next door to the restaurant that is used for the buffet. Also a split level building so a lot of stairs to get down to restaurant & bar and down onto the terrace (lovely views). Terrace was a lovely spot for a drink but a long walk to the bar which wasn’t easy to find. Our room was in the lodge which is quite a walk from the main building (plus 2 flights up to reception). Though you can move your car round to park by the lodge we had already taken our luggage into reception not realising how far we would have to take it. Small clean modern room, fine for one night, but very hot (it was 33c heatwave) with room being south facing, large windows, no air con or fan. Those with mobility issues would struggle. Very friendly service. Restaurant is very expensive at £70 for 3 courses. The food was good but felt overpriced. I rarely eat 3 courses so I would prefer à la carte or at least the choice of 2 courses.

The location was stunning and the views were spectacular. The Atmosphere was amazing and the decor was beautiful. The rooms are beautiful. The mattress was very comfortable. The duvet and the pillows were awful and uncomfortable. I didn’t sleep very well. Spoke to receptionist about changing the pillows and was told that all the pillows were the same. So I had 2 nights not really slept. There were about 6 of us staying and we all experienced the same thing. We ordered drinks from the bar. There were no nibbles to hand ( crisps or nuts , olives etc etc ) .There were 19 of us for the evening meal. I don’t think the kitchen could cope with that amount of people. The menu was over complicated and the chef was trying a little too hard. I had John Dory which is a very delicate fish and was really over cooked and plonked on top of a mound of thinly sliced runner beans. There wasn’t much of a taste to it. Extremely disappointed. We had my mother in law’s wake in the banqueting hall and the spread that they laid on was really delicious and plentiful. Although tea, coffee and chilled water was made available, there was no one offering to take other drink orders. The service given didn’t reflect the price of the room. Having one lift for the staying guests and housekeeping to use isn’t great. Recently having a knee operation and not able to use the stairs, in the morning the housekeeping we’re using the lift for laundry so I had to use the stairs which was incredibly difficult. So all in all the location is beautiful the ambience really lovely but the service could have been better and the food that’s complicated.
