My wife and I both loved our time staying here -the staff found nothing too much trouble and helped the two of us, both in our eighties, cope with various IT challenges. The food was varied and interesting and well presented. The breakfast enormously varied and generous. Our beds were comfortable and our fear that we might be disturbed by others proved unjustified. We found the decoration of the old hostelry tastefully done.

“Lovely stay, will book again”

Exactly what we were looking for in almost all regards. We had visited the pub for meals in previous years and were a little wrongfooted that vegan options had all but disappeared from the menu and were not clearly labelled where they did exist. No burger even, very unexpected! It was rather like the old days when options had to be negotiated by table staff journeying back to the chef and returning with annotated menus 😂 Still, the food we did have (risotto and the big salad sans certain ingredients) was very nice and I'm sure once the new chef has settled in all that will be smoothed out. Our second evening we ate instead at the Black Rabbit, 5 mins by taxi away and a lovely walk back through the wetlands and with great views of the castle. Brace for the final hill before arriving back at St Mary's Gate Inn though! 🙂) We stayed in Tulip room, very comfortable beds, spotlessly clean and very nicely decorated. Some very nice nibbles on the drinks tray, sadly not vegan but a nice gesture in theory. Only cow milk provided also. Kettle under TV gave us pause, and we forgot to ask if we could keep the carton of oat milk we bought (for hot drinks in the room) in the breakfast nook in the pub downstairs, but I'm sure they would have been ok with that. All the staff were so lovely and accommodating, even leaving us an essentials top-up outside the room when we accidentally left the DND sign on the handle, very thoughtful. Breakfast was 8-930 and self service apart from drinks. Don't rely on it too heavily, there is plant milk for cereals but bread was difficult to find for toast on the third day and there were nonvegans complaining over something to do with the egg boiler. Plenty of fruit salad and spreads to be going on with though. For the rooms above the pub, you can access through the pub or via a separate door with a code when the pub is closed. It looked like the ground floor rooms around the back have their own doors off the gravelled parking bay. If you have mobility issues, the stairs to the rooms above the pub are quite steep but there are good handrails. The ground floor access is via a loosely gravelled area but looked a bit more accessible. All in all a lovely stay in a lovely place, will definitely be booking again for next year. We visited the Cathedral (carpet of flowers on at the time), the wetlands centre which was excellent, the castle, the museum and had several nice walks around in just two full days. Thanks to all the staff for the warm welcome and your help with our cases (both in offering to take upstairs and also keeping them for us between checkout and our train on the last day. Much appreciated)
