“Glad we booked the wrong place!”

First class room and service. We had an excellent meal in the cosy restaurant which comprised delicious local produce. The wine list was both interesting and reasonable - although there was Montrachet if you wanted to put the boat out. Breakfast was eggsellent too.

There’s a certain joy in being proved completely wrong. Driving along the busy stretch between Norwich and Ipswich, you’d be forgiven for passing this place without a second glance. An old pub, set back from the road, giving little away. It doesn’t shout for attention—and at first glance, it doesn’t seem like somewhere that would deliver anything particularly special. And then you step inside. What unfolds behind that unassuming façade is something altogether different—a genuine hidden gem. The kind of place you almost don’t want to tell people about, for fear it’ll become too popular. Room 9 was a standout. Generous in size, thoughtfully laid out, and finished to a high standard. If there’s a minor quibble, it’s that the furniture leans slightly toward the corporate side—just a touch at odds with the character and warmth of a restaurant-with-rooms. But it’s a small note in what is otherwise a very comfortable and polished space. Where this place really comes into its own is service. From the moment of check-in through to a leisurely breakfast the following morning, the team strike that rare balance: friendly without being overbearing, knowledgeable without being rehearsed, and attentive without ever feeling intrusive. It all feels natural, easy—like you’re being looked after by people who genuinely care. And then there’s the food. Dinner was, quite simply, exceptional. From the amuse-bouche through to dessert, each course showcased local ingredients treated with real respect and creativity. There’s a confidence in the kitchen—nothing overworked, nothing unnecessary—just beautifully judged, flavour-led cooking. It’s not cheap, but it absolutely earns its price tag. Breakfast followed suit. The same care, the same attention to detail, the same sense that everything on the plate has been considered. It’s the kind of breakfast that makes you slow down, order another coffee, and quietly consider cancelling your plans for the day. All in all, this is a place that defies expectations in the best possible way. A modest exterior hiding something rather special within—a true jewel on an otherwise ordinary stretch of road.

“Nice bed & breakfast but rooms need updating”

The staff were really friendly and efficient. The breakfast was delicious with a good choice of hot and cold options served in the lovely restaurant area. The staff were really friendly and efficient. The breakfast was delicious with a good choice of hot and cold options served in the lovely restaurant area. We stayed one night in a room in the small annexe. The Auberge is on a very busy road so we were pleased the annexe was set back and the the road noise was minimal. However I think the rooms need a liitle updating. The room was large, clean and comfortable but was a bit dated. The door to the annexe was supposed to be automatic and was out of order. The toilet roll holder was hanging off the wall. The TV is on a desk with the desk chair in front of it. Also the lighting just doesn't work for an hotel room e.g. one poor bedside light. However all in all we enjoyed our stay there.
