“Lovely break to Carlisle”

Stayed in one of the 2 bedroom apartments with our 2 children for a break between Xmas and new year , rooms were lovely , very spacious and a well equipped kitchen area , very well kept and staff very friendly. Would return , hotel is central to the centre and plenty nice restaurants near by.

The Halston seems to be the only upmarket accommodation in Carlisle. Everything else available online seems to be made up of Inns and tired old Victorian hotels that have seen better days. The Halston seems to be the only upmarket accommodation in Carlisle. Everything else available online seems to be made up of Inns and tired old Victorian hotels that have seen better days. Hence my wife and I chose it to stay for one night whilst visiting the city. It proved ideal and its location is central to all the relevant points of interest. We chose a superior single apartment in the main building. We found it to be fitted out to a high standard with everything you could need to either self-cater or eat locally. All in all we enjoyed our stay but the following points are worth noting: Firstly, as mentioned, the only car parking available is in a public area adjacent to the hotel. Although flood lit, it would be a high risk to leave a valuable car there overnight so you’re best arriving by train or taxi. There is a drop off bay in front of the building but beware of passing traffic. The room heating was presumably under floor, controlled by thermostats in each room. This means that all the surface areas are hardwood effect which can feel cold when walking around. Slippers seem to be provided to cope with this. We found that trying to increase the heat took a long time so don’t expect instant results. For hot days a Dyson Air blade was supplied as standard but there is no air conditioning. The biggest issue for us, and frankly the one factor that would prevent us returning is the fact that the hotel website states that a single superior room comes with a king-sized bed. Ours (103) didn’t! It was a ‘double’ at best, equipped with a very soft mattress and oversized pillows that caused my wife and I to spend the whole night hanging onto the edges trying not to wake each other. Being in our early seventies our hips and backs suffered accordingly. Neither of us managed more than a few hours sleep and we felt wrecked the next morning. I should stress that there was nothing faulty with the bedding provided, but it didn't work for us. Perhaps it’s worth checking the status of the bedding in your chosen room before you book. Service was efficient with all staff pleasant and helpful. Apart from the bedding issue we felt that The Halston offered good value for money.
