I have stayed at the Cranage Estate a few times before. This time I upgraded to a deluxe room. I thought I was booking direct but somehow managed to get hoodwinked by a company called Priceline who added £40 as a booking fee. Rachel at Cranage Estate managed to intervene and I received a full refund, and then she booked me in direct. Rachel was competent and proactive with the situation and I am grateful for her intervention. The upgraded room was very clean and felt recently decorated in a luxurious design. There was a good room tray with biscuits and water. The upgrade was worth it. Five stars to housekeeping. The hotel generally is clean and well presented. It is a larger hotel, so expect a bit of walking. I used the bar for lunch as I was out in the evening. This is a nice enough environment and service was good. The food was disappointing. The chicken strips were underseasoned, the pie was okay, the chips slightly under cooked and the gravy unispiring. A pot of peas would have added colour and at £20 for the pie and chips alone it was inadequate. I was thinking about the food you buy from the supermarket freezer section, and that is not what you expect to be crossing your mind. Banging doors and loud door mechanisms started at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning. Breakfast was typical and good enough. The hash browns were crispy and not soggy, but the fried eggs had the look and texture of haribo eggs. Buffet breakfasts have these problems. The location, just off the M6, is useful. I will go back, but I will avoid eating in the bar.

“Bigger than it looks!”

The hotel is located in beautiful grounds, about five minutes from junction 18 of the M6. It is close to Holmes Chapel where there are places to eat, should you not wish to dine at the hotel. The hotel is located in beautiful grounds, about five minutes from junction 18 of the M6. It is close to Holmes Chapel where there are places to eat, should you not wish to dine at the hotel. There is a health spa and gym, however we did not have the time to use it so cannot comment on it. The hotel is extensive, not only the manor house shown. It is a fair walk to some of the rooms. Parts of the car park can be a good walk from reception, this is fine if it is dry and warm, but could be different if it is cold or raining. All of the staff we encountered were professional, well turned out, polite and friendly. Our bar meal was very good indeed, hot, plentiful and well presented. The breakfast choice was one of the best we have seen at any hotel, with a great choice of hot and cold foods. Our room was clean and comfortable, with little if any external noise. The bathroom could really do with a refit though. If the hotel suffers from anything, it is in places looking somewhat tired as I said our room in particular could do with a refit, especially the bathroom. Good value for money, we would quite happily stay here again.

On arrival to the hotel, the front of house staff were very pleasant, and helpful. The place looked very grand. We were then directed to our room, which seemed to take ages through windy corridors that resembled a nursing home. The room was ok, the bathroom needed some attention, there was bulbs blown and the bath looked grubby with silicone missing. The part that let this room down was the noise in the morning, it started around 5 AM, all we could hear was door banging, water running and general chit chat outside our room. This continued throughout the morning, so don’t stay here as a couple of you want a restful stay. The bar and the restaurant were ok, the food in the restaurant was good but slightly overpriced. The drinks are way overpriced, with a glass of wine at £15 (googled the wine and you can get a bottle in Waitrose for £12). A pint of Cruzcampo was close to £8. We didn’t go for breakfast as we were too tired after being woken at 5 am. The pool area was very good and worth a visit. Overall a mixed bag, the review would have been better if we had actually got some sleep.
