“Above average, let down by the bar food”

I have stayed at the Cranage Estate a few times before. This time I upgraded to a deluxe room. I thought I was booking direct but somehow managed to get hoodwinked by a company called Priceline who added £40 as a booking fee. Rachel at Cranage Estate managed to intervene and I received a full refun… more

“Bigger than it looks!”

The hotel is located in beautiful grounds, about five minutes from junction 18 of the M6. It is close to Holmes Chapel where there are places to eat, should you not wish to dine at the hotel. There is a health spa and gym, however we did not have the time to use it so cannot comment on it. The hot… more

“Mixed bag”

On arrival to the hotel, the front of house staff were very pleasant, and helpful. The place looked very grand. We were then directed to our room, which seemed to take ages through windy corridors that resembled a nursing home. The room was ok, the bathroom needed some attention, there was bulbs bl… more

  • Guests at De Vere Cranage Estate say: Conveniently located just a few minutes off the M6, finding De Vere Cranage Estate is easier than finding excuses to avoid leg day. The route is straightforward, well sign-posted and before long you arrive at an entrance that feels less like pulling up to a hotel and more like arriving at a country estate where somebody important probably lives. The approach alone deserves its own standing ovation. You’re welcomed through fabulous grounds bursting with life – ponds shimmering in the sunlight, mature trees standing proudly, wildlife darting around and gardens so well maintained that even the squirrels looked like they had purpose. It immediately creates that feeling of: ah yes… this is going to be good. Then comes the grand entrance. Driving up, you’re met with a spectacular frontage and, upon stepping inside, the red carpet treatment genuinely begins. Quite literally. Walking into reception felt like entering somewhere hosting an awards ceremony, only thankfully nobody asked me to make a speech. I was greeted by staff who were exceptionally friendly, professional and welcoming. Check-in was swift, smooth and genuinely pleasant – no robotic scripts or awkward exchanges. Before I knew it, room key in hand, I was heading toward Room 272. The walk there was surprisingly enjoyable in itself. Elegant public galleries, bright corridors and an impressive collection of function and meeting spaces made the journey feel less like navigating hotel hallways and more like touring a stately home that had gone to business school. Then I opened the room door. Wow. The room struck that difficult balance that many hotels attempt but few master. Bright, spacious and comfortable, with just enough quirky design flair to keep things interesting without descending into "modern art exhibition where someone forgot to explain the concept." There was a generous workspace, comfortable armchair, side table, television and all the expected hotel essentials. And then there was the bed. Large, inviting and armed with pillows that deserve independent recognition. Outstanding. The mattress was ridiculously comfortable and although I’m pleased to report there were no nighttime mishaps, I slept like a baby and woke up feeling suspiciously refreshed. Curiosity then took me outdoors for a wander around the grounds. I loved seeing a hotel genuinely embracing nature rather than simply planting a shrub and calling it "landscaping." The ponds and wooded areas attract birds and squirrels in abundance and there are plenty of thoughtfully placed outdoor seating areas where you can sit with a coffee and enjoy the surroundings. It felt peaceful, natural and wonderfully relaxing. I also paid a visit to The Club and sampled the pool, sauna and steam room facilities. Whilst the sauna and steam room are on the smaller side – perhaps four people comfortably – they certainly don't hold back on heat. Both were excellent and thoroughly enjoyable. I didn’t use the gyms, although they looked modern, well-equipped and more than capable of punishing anyone motivated enough to voluntarily exercise on holiday. Dinner that evening was taken in the hotel bar where I opted for the hotdog and chips. At around £22, it was very enjoyable and certainly delivered on flavour. The bar itself was perhaps my only slight head-scratcher. It feels caught somewhere between bar, games room and restaurant. There’s a pool table and table football which add a bit of character, but oddly the seating itself felt a little lacking. Comfortable sofas or more relaxed seating areas would transform the atmosphere almost overnight. As it stands, it feels a little like a restaurant that forgot to fully commit to being one. That said, there is plenty of comfortable seating near reception, although being a floor above the bar means it isn't quite the cosy "settle in for the evening" space it perhaps could be. But here’s the important part: none of that detracted from the experience. This really is a fantastic hotel. Are there one or two things I might tweak? Of course. But did they leave a sour taste? Not even remotely. The service, surroundings, facilities and overall atmosphere combine to create somewhere genuinely memorable. I loved my stay. And not to sound like Arnold... I'll be back.
