“Perfect poached eggs.”

We stayed at The Royal Castle for five nights from the 26th April 26 which we booked direct as soon as they reopened as we wanted to be sure to have a walk in shower, a super king bed and very importantly a non dog friendly room. We were in room 2 which was a lovely room overlooking the boat float … more

  • Yes, guests at Royal Castle Hotel have highlighted that: We stayed at The Royal Castle for five nights from the 26th April 26 which we booked direct as soon as they reopened as we wanted to be sure to have a walk in shower, a super king bed and very importantly a non dog friendly room. We were in room 2 which was a lovely room overlooking the boat float well appointed and very tastefully decorated. The refurbishment of the hotel has been tastefully done keeping many of the original features and the sloping floors. The hotel is very well located in the heart of Dartmouth making everything just a short walk away. We hadn’t been to Dartmouth for thirteen years prior to which we had stayed at the Dart Marina for 25 years but we had fallen out of love with the hotel. So having stayed at The Masons Arms in Branscombe last year and really enjoying everything about our stay (except the narrow road in and out of the village) we decided to look at the Royal Castle now also owned by St. Austell Brewery. The only slight concern we had was parking as we wanted to park the car and leave it for the week so we could enjoy Dartmouth, but than the park and ride a long way out of town and no ride at the time of our visit, there wasn’t any car park where you could just leave the car (happy to pay) for a week with no need to return to it. After some research we found the Dart Haven Marina car park in Kingswear where we could leave the car for £11 for 24 hours so that’s what we did and caught the ferry back. We ate dinner in the Royal Castle Hotel restaurant the first night which was lovely though I was a little concerned when the waiter said we are running out of wine as we are changing suppliers on Tuesday which all seemed a little odd but I managed to find a nice Rioja. Breakfast every day was in the same restaurant and I have to mention the perfectly cooked poached eggs every day which I find unusual to have such consistently perfect poaching, well done that chef. The cooked breakfast otherwise was ok but wasn’t the best I have ever had one rasher of folded over and seemingly precooked bacon and kept warm and one mushroom unless I asked for two of each on an uninteresting plate. I think we were a tad unlucky as whilst not a problem and I do appreciate the age and possible soundproofing of the building we seemed to have residents in the room above who walked up and down heavily from 8am to 6pm every day we were there during the time we were in the room. I began to think it was an office above and not a residential room so went to look but it was room 8. It was more annoying than a problem and wouldn’t deter us from staying again and asking for the same room as it’s unlikely we will have the same residents above or someone that is constantly walking. There was a good amount of space in the bedroom and the bathroom and if I had a wish it would be for a little more drawer or shelf storage in the bedroom and a shelf in the bathroom to put a wash bag and toiletries on as there was a lot of wasted space which could easily be utilised. Will we return, yes definitely as we are to The Masons Arms Branscome later this year.
