With the incredibly hot weather, we were looking for a place to stop overnight on our way down to Cornwall. We were travelling with our golden retriever and needed somewhere that would be dog friendly but also have air conditioning to keep her comfortable. This place was brilliant, the staff were so friendly and accommodating and the room was great with a comfy bed and powerful air conditioning keeping us all comfortable in the heat. They provided us with a late checkout at 1pm and after we sat downstairs in the air conditioned bar whilst waiting for the heat of the day to pass. Overall a really welcoming place to stay and we will definitely visit again. Thank you all!

The staff were excellent. The food was excellent. The room was excellent. Very enjoyable.

The room was clean and well appointed. The complimentary port and flapjack along with the usual tea and coffee was a nice touch. We also had decent air conditioning ! The room was clean and well appointed. The complimentary port and flapjack along with the usual tea and coffee was a nice touch. We also had decent air conditioning ! Great given how hot the weather was. We were on the top floor, fine for us but might be a problem if you struggle with stairs. We had both breakfast and dinner in the restaurant. The food was really nice and the service friendly and efficient. We parked about a 10 minute walk away but did pass a smaller car park closer to the Hotel en route. Both were on the Ringo parking App. Will definitely stay again when in Exeter.

Our very short stay was a catalogue of incidents. Arriving in Exeter, trying to find the car park, noted as being the nearest on their own website, proved tricky as it closed several months ago! Not the hotel’s fault but take that info off the website. On checking in, eventually, we were told “no breakfast tomorrow, planned maintenance”. Not only were we not advised of this at any time from booking to arrival, we had been charged for 3 days bed & breakfast! The room was lovely as was the en-suite. The air con (one of the reasons we booked this place) was very noisy, as in a grinding noise, every two minutes, I know it was two minutes because I listened to it for hours! I eventually got up to switch it off, a/c stopped, grinding continued…to top it off, as mentioned by other reviewers, the TV didn’t work. Not a massive issue but the World Cup is on and England were playing the following day. As reception wasn’t manned, we left a note the next morning asking for these things to be fixed, and we went in search of breakfast. We then went shopping afterwards and returned in the afternoon to an unmade room and no response to our note. We spoke to a lady who said she could move us but all the a/c was the same! She couldn’t fix the tv either. We called Hotel Indigo, they had rooms so we packed and left. To their credit the City Gate gave us a full refund without any argument. It’s such a shame. The reasons we booked the hotel were that it wasn’t a chain, helping local business and all that, and the A/C but let down on both points.
