We managed to reserve a table for 8pm the other day despite a kitchen staff shortage. They couldn't advance this because of the kitchen pressures ( we arrived early for an aperitif) but this was fine as we enjoyed the lounge bar. They wanted to ensure that the food received the full attention of the kitchen...a correct approach. From a £35 for three courses menu we ate : Firstly - broccoli and cheese veloute and a beautiful cheese soufflle...both very good. Main course- we both enjoyed a large plate of lovely medium-rare sirloin with a good selection of vegetables ( very good cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire). Dessert - TT ate a a date/toffee sponge with excellent ice cream. Mrs TT was not in a sweet toothed frame of kind so they offered a "cut down" cheese plate despite it not being on the 3 course menu..thank you. Wine was nice and at no dearer prices than the Swan up the road where we were staying ( and which is a much less classy place !). They serve a nice pint of Wainwright Gold ...and TT has a nice Australian sweet wine with dessert. It is a Harbour Hotel.. our previous visit to one having been lunch in the Southampton one ( the one shaped like a super yacht....) which was also VG. Rothay Garden has a lovely dining room with views to the garden...and its 100% table service with white tablecloths etc and so more upmarket than so many " hard tabletop with mats" places. My wife and I stayed at the Rothay Garden Hotel for a one night stay on Good Friday. We have stayed at other hotels in Grasmere for a number of years and always said that one day we would try this hotel. The hotel is in a brilliant location and the room and hotel facilities were brilliant. We decided to have dinner at the hotel and made use of the 3 course meal for £35. The food was good but unfortunately the portion size for the main course was too small. I don't know whether the reason for this was because it was part of a deal, but it did disappoint.

Writing a review on Rothay Garden, I booked a night stay for a birthday lake district surprise for my girlfriend. We loved it so much last time in May 24, I thought it amazing to come back again. Staff are really friendly, hotel is in a stunning location in Grasmere. The spa facilities offered are nothing like the hotels around, and the grounds are a real stand out point to the neighbouring hotels. However, returning to the hotel a couple of years later did make me feel it wasn’t up to the same standards as last time. I’ve listed what I think the hotel could improve on; - Parking - I understand cost are going up but paying £270 for a room to be charged £10 parking each night is absurd. I didn’t pay and parked the car on the road - I’d expect these charges from much cheaper hotels. - Rooms - They are looking more tired and walls are marked and would benefit from new carpet. A lot of the lights in the room had been messed with so the switches didn’t operate the lamps. Sink basin had hairline markings, was clean but looking tired. - Spa - Spa is fantastic. The cold mist function on your shower doesn’t work and part of the sauna was taped off for repair. - Service - A couple of years ago you gave vouchers for a gin to get from the bar. I thought this was such a good touch, however the hotel has changed this to leaving gin in the room. Appreciate the thought but the 100ml in a large bottle looks lost. Wouldn’t the voucher drive revenue at the bar as it was empty in comparison to our last visit? - Breakfast - I must admit I was really disappointed here. We opted for the breakfast as last time it was amazing with the yoghurt pots. We came down this morning and the staff were very friendly. However the continental breakfast buffet was bare - There wasn’t any juices left, one overnight oats pot and a couple of pastries. You accommodated my veggie breakfast really well, but the buffet was very poor. So Rothay Garden - I’d love to return again if the hotel offered the same service as May 24, but my May 26 visit wasn’t the same. I’ve read a few reviews and saw some lower graded ones creeping in. I appreciate costs are up, but this is still a four star hotel. Thanks, Matthew (Room 23).

We’ve stayed at the Rothay many times. This was our first time since the hotel was sold to the Harbour group. The staff were attentive and polite, and the food was excellent. The hotel is priced towards the premium end of Lake District hotels and this is where it lets itself down. For the price it’s starting to look a little shabby if our room was anything to go by. Harbour group - spend some money at your north of England hotel.
